The architectural program for this project was to rebuild a house in a residential subdivision developed about forty years ago. Many houses from that era remain in the neighborhood today, and this new structure follows their lead in terms of the shape of the roof, color of the exterior walls, and other elements of the overall form. Looking at these older buildings, one notices that the one-meter-wide margin of space around them that is required by setback regulations is typically a simple gap used for storage or to house utility pipes or appliances such as air conditioning units. Even when the setback is wider, the orientation of the properties often means that large windows in neighboring houses look out on these open spaces, making privacy difficult to obtain.

This property is located in a densely developed residential neighborhood of Osaka. The client had lived on the site since childhood, so when he commissioned us to design a new house there, we began by soliciting extensive input from him because he of course knew the characteristics of the site intimately. Following these discussions, we decided we wanted to build a house that would enable him to discover new things within this familiar place.

The site is located in North Eastern part of Osaka prefecture, where its surrounding neighborhood in mature residential quarter remains quiet, even though it is just a little away from the main road. While the site has a flat condition as it does not have any height difference, the surrounding residential area has ups and downs, and the site is in a sunken part of the area.

This is a residential area where the magnificent nature still remains. The site is situated on a sloped land among natural forest. Two large trees with beautifully shaped branches (one is a camphor tree and the other a cherry tree) stand on top of the site. These trees are integrated into the residential design.

The site is located on a corner lot of a fancy residential area on a hill, and faces toward sloped roads on the west and north sides. This residential area was developed about a half century ago. As time has passed, small-scale developments have been undertaken due to dividing and uniting lots.
