One year after the completion of Qingli, our studio began working on the second phase. Over that year, Weizhou Island had undergone significant changes: tourists were increasing, and public infrastructure was gradually improving. The island's boutique guesthouse (minshuku) market was booming, with new establishments popping up everywhere. In such a heated market, maintaining composure and independent thinking, while striking a balance between local integration and innovation, presents a major challenge. Most guesthouses on the island are renovations of existing structures, meaning designers must overcome inherent construction flaws and inefficient original floor plans.

The Wanfenglin Stone House is located in a mountain village within Wanfenglin, in the southeastern part of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. The local karst topography has shaped a unique vernacular landscape of undulating peaks, which once led the Ming Dynasty geographer Xu Xiake to marvel, "Of all the many peaks in the world, only here do they form a forest."

The "So-House" project is a housing service initiated and managed by the Society of Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention, Hong Kong (SRACP). Designed for rehabilitated offenders, it serves as transitional housing to help them reintegrate into society while providing care and support in their daily lives. In Hong Kong, the term "rehabilitated offenders" refers to individuals who have served their sentences and are reforming to rejoin society. Previously referred to as "ex-convicts," the Correctional Services Department of Hong Kong officially changed the term in 2000 to avoid negative stereotypes, establishing the SRACP to offer counseling and assistance.

If there was a single parameter to
measure the success of a work of architecture, this should be the satisfaction
of its inhabitants. Both the words ‘success’ and ‘satisfaction’ are ambiguous
and subjective, and as all reductionism it raises many debates, but we must say
that in this case, we are not interested. We do not consider relevant to fall
upon the shape or sustainability of the intervention, in this project we
highlight as the key to our success the joy of a couple of living in their house
and our joy of completing the work and sharing a glass of wine with them in
their kitchen.
