The development, planned by Sehw for JOPE Real Estate AG, aims to create a sustainable and socially inclusive urban block in Berlin-Reinickendorf. The design emphasizes ecological innovation, social integration, and diverse living models, blending new construction with a respectful expansion of a 1930s residential complex.

Lusatia, a former lignite mining region, is facing the challenges of a profound structural transformation. To retain young families in the area, more educational offerings are being developed – not only in elementary education but now also in secondary schools. The Spree-Neisse district, located in the eastern part of Brandenburg along the Polish border, has paved the way for a comprehensive school with an upper secondary level and a three-field sports hall. Sehw Architektur, after winning the competition, implemented the project as an inclusive and inspiring learning environment.

Nine classes can now be accommodated at this location. The compact two-story structure with a light-colored facing brick façade and elongated wood-aluminum window elements responds to the existing school building with a calm and clear geometry.

In the heart of Berlin, housing for students is becoming increasingly unaffordable, making the outskirts more important when it comes to creating new living spaces for this target group. A housing project for students consisting of 159 flats, commissioned by the city-owned housing company Berlinovo, has recently been completed in the up-and-coming district of Oberschöneweide in the Treptow borough. It was constructed as part of a framework agreement for the creation of new, serially produced residential buildings. This followed a competition organized by the Association of the German Housing Industry as a conceptual procedure to find innovative ideas.

The project includes the construction of a new library and the refurbishment and upgrading of existing buildings. Villa von Bülow, a neoclassical building from the 19th century, is listed as a historical monument and has been carefully restored. The former nurses’ residence of the adjacent hospital, dating back to the 1970s, has been incorporated into the research campus, also refurbished and repurposed as an administrative building. A delicate glass bridge connects the new with the existing buildings, creating an exciting interplay between old and new and a dynamic sense of identity.

The new technical centre for the Institute of Electrical Engineering at the University of Rostock creates a modern teaching and research environment for the Institute for Applied Microelectronics and Data Processing Technology and the Institute of Communications Engineering. The horizontally banded copper façade with rounded corners follows the formal image of the copper coil and gives the building its sheen. A shining prelude to the STEM Campus.

Structural change poses major challenges for some regions, among them Lusatia, a former lignite mining region. “The Brandenburg state government, in close cooperation with the Saxon state government, wants to give additional impetus and more momentum to structural development in Lusatia and develop it into a model region for structural change,” the state of Brandenburg says on its website. How can these goals be achieved? By counteracting the exodus of young families in particular with modern educational offers; for example, with a school according to the latest pedagogical findings and with high architectural standards. We have built such a school for Lusatia: the primary school section of an inclusive school centre in Döbern. Three storeys, two parallel classes per year for 360 pupils.

The overall building volume of the Gustav Heinemann Comprehensive School in Essen was broken down into differentiated section. The stringent structure has resulted in clearly defined outdoor spaces on the school campus. The offset positioning of the individual building sections ensures a scaled integration into the urban context. The offset of the two southern building parts creates a clearly recognisable entrance zone, which, with its forecourt, represents the prelude and identity of the new school grounds.

Schools have developed into all-day and inclusive learning and living spaces. The new schools need spatial concepts that can be used flexibly. For this purpose, the big school is divided into several small organisational units, the small schools or clusters. This organisation in clusters makes it possible to create semi-autonomous social-spatial units in large schools, which are manageable for pupils and teachers and allow a sense of home to develop. These pedagogical objectives lead to new architectural requirements. Architecture becomes a pedagogue.
