Renovation and Extension of a Building for 7 Apartments / Sau Taller d'Arquitectura

The project aims to renovate and expand two early 20th-century terraced houses, located on the corner of Triomf and Planas i Casals streets in Badalona, to transform them into a residential building with seven apartments distributed across three floors. The dwellings are organized around a central service core and open to the streets through new facade openings that preserve the proportions and dimensions of the pre-existing architecture. The result is a residential building that integrates into the consolidated urban fabric, highlights the historical memory of the site, and improves living conditions.

The renovation project for the Santa Eulàlia School in Cornellà de Llobregat addresses three major challenges: improving thermal comfort and solar protection in the classrooms, restoring the school's landmark character within the neighborhood, and executing all construction work in just three months during the school summer break. To achieve this, industrialized systems were prioritized to allow off-site fabrication and reduce construction time.

The LC house is positioned at the northern edge of the plot, adjacent to the access road, in order to free up as much garden space as possible to the south and open up the views. To ensure the largest possible south-facing façade and fully utilize the ground-floor footprint, a square plan is proposed (9.3 x 9.3 meters). The structure consists of a perimeter balloon frame and four central columns that define four 15 m² spaces, one in each corner of the house. These spaces are separated by two service cores, resulting in a cruciform floor layout.

The plot, located on the street Calle de la Font, has a demanding topography with more than four meters of unevenness on the north-south axis. The road, on the south façade, has a slope that exceeds 20% and surrounds the house until it ends in a substantially flat open space to the north, forming a very pleasant space in the summer. On the other hand, the plot benefits from a very good orientation, with sunlight all day and privileged views of the surrounding landscape; the mountains of Bisaura, the town, and, above all, the church and its bell tower.

L’Esquirol House / SAU Taller d’Arquitectura

L’Esquirol House is situated in a row house of several stories in the village of the same name in the county of Osona. Francesc, one of the children of the house’s owners, contacted Sau Taller d’Arquitectura, a Catalan practice with a great deal of experience in this type of intervention, to turn the ground floor into a separate dwelling, independent of the rest of the building. Francesc’s objective was to live in “a house with large shared spaces, with lots of light and easy access”, and for his mother to continue living independently. This meant that the biggest challenge of the project was climate control, addressing both lighting and ventilation.

The ceiling of concrete joists was in a poor state of repair and the roof and brick openwork supports were neither waterproof nor ensured the desired climatic performance, prompting the following intervention: The entire roof was replaced with a single element, a Pratt truss, that forms the structure and restores the entire section, gaining 19 m2 of loft space.

This Train Store in Ribes de Freser (Girona, Spain), was conceived in order to solve the climatic problems of the station and to shelter the railrack trains from vandalism. With this aim this big and diaphanous volume was realized. A three dimension metallic dry construction structure thought to be built without affecting the normal timetable of the train route. The roof is designed to be a solar energy collector covering all its south faced slopes with photovoltaic panels. Horitzontallity and the use of reflecting and transparent materials integrates the building in the landscape decreasing the visual impact of this big volume.
