Satish Jassal Architects has completed a new-build single-storey house on a backland site in Haringey, north London. Located behind a butcher’s shop on busy Turnpike Lane, and accessed via a 1m-wide covered passageway between retail premises, constructing the house was “like building through a straw,” says Satish. Despite the challenging site, the result is a home that brings light, volume, and materials to the fore.

Stood astride an existing London stock brick wall and incorporating a range of brick bonding styles, including a unique vertically-bonded structural wall, Southwark Brick House in Bermondsey is a showcase for this highly versatile building material. The newbuild three-bedroom house, designed and project-managed by Satish Jassal Architects, comprises two floors and a basement level spread across two brick wings accessed via a central staircase.

Satish Jassal Architects have completed a loft conversion in Finchley, Barnet, which has added 30% extra floor area to a semi-detached house. The brief was to create a large home office, cinema space, with a shower room that could also work as a master bedroom at a future date. We spent much time with the client understanding how the room would be used in the present and the future, which allowed us to exactly design and detail each element coherently.

The client had a garage laying dormant for 10 years. He approached us and asked us to do something with it. We successfully gained planning permission for a one bedroom house. The site measures 11 x 3.6 metres, and the building footprint is 3.6 x 8.6 metres. It was a challenge to get a house on such a small footprint. Due to overlooking issues we were only allowed to put windows to the side and to the front not to the rear
