Inspired by sci-fi set design, Gelato Messina Cronulla draws from romantic visions of the future. A grid of oversized, underlit circular lights hovers over a space that is many things at once: gritty, reflective, warm, and bold. Our fourth project with Gelato Messina, the brief was to evolve both the brand and the space—something unique and distinct from their other stores, something experimental and futuristic.

A flagship store for Gelato Messina and most likely the only store in Adelaide (for a while). The clients wanted the materials to be robust and long-lasting and the design to be unique and memorable. The fit-out channels the original Messina aesthetic of a bit retro and a bit mid-century. There is a leaning toward the use of terrazzo and tiles, referencing the yellow terrazzo porch of the attached house (and future restaurant) and as materials that connect to the Aus-Italian housing typologies of suburban Australia.

Moving a few doors up from their original store on King St, the ‘new’ Gelato Messina is a bit retro, a bit 70s, but also a bit shiny. The clients approached us to design this store after seeing a mid-century-style house we had designed. Their brief was to embrace the existing concrete ceiling and to create something that was a bit mid-century but more funky than the house. The site, just up the road from (and replacing) one of the first Gelato Messina stores, is narrow, with just enough space to fit a small rear counter and circulation on either side of the gelato freezer.

The brief for the project outlined a concept for a venue, running off a 'vibrant' lane way in Adelaide. The experience of this bar was to be entwined with a narrative. This narrative was of the outdoors, a childhood memory of fire cooked food and camping in the forest.
