Carving architecture from the earth – Surrounded by undulating terrain and historic residential zones dating back to the Edo period, Escenario Hanabusayama reflects the strata and slopes of its environment in both form and materiality. The façade—accented with elongated, slanted ridges—evokes layers of rock, while the approach and boundary walls incorporate slender stone patterns and gentle inclines reminiscent of natural formations. The exposed concrete exterior, as if cut directly from the cliff, anchors the building into the landscape, blurring the boundary between structure and terrain.

Ryuichi Sasaki Architecture, an award-winning, internationally acclaimed architectural design firm specializing in cultural experiences, is proud to unveil the Ideareve-Ikegami. Completed in 2021 in collaboration with Takayuki Yagi and Yagi Komuten, for the client Yasunori Kamata / K-M-T, the reinforced concrete structure was designed to accommodate a music hall, practice rooms, soundproofed residential rental units, and a penthouse.

This project is located on the north side of the Nakano station in Tokyo, Japan. A few minutes’ walk from the station, it may be found in between two streets: one leading to Heiwa-no-Mori Park and the other to the back of the station. The apartment building has been planned to have the main entrance from the backstreet side to provide some privacy. While another entrance, which directly faces the office on the first floor, faces the street which leads to the Heiwa-no-Mori Park.

This project has a triple role of residential, retail, and office spaces within the building complex. Located in Shirokane, Minato ward in Tokyo, it may be found at a corner of a four-way intersection on Gonohashidori — a street that extends to the south of Furukawa River.

Some of the main key challenges of this project were to create spatial sensations within the rooms, while limited to a small property. This has been achieved by applying sliding doors as dividers of apartment rooms, resulting in widening the living room area and giving it a wider and spatial feeling.

Located on a commercial street about thirty minutes by train from the center of Tokyo, within walking distance from Shiki Station in Saitama Prefecture, this steel-frame multi-tenant building has four stories above ground and one below. The city of Shiki prospered as a commercial area on the banks of the Shingashi River during the Edo period, and in modern times developed as a major stop on the Tobu-Tojo railway line.

This building is located in a residential area in the heart of Tokyo amid a mixture of old temples and modern houses. Kagurazaka slope, the area’s main market street, is known for its centuries-long cultural history. Roji, narrow alleys with a lot of hidden charm, branch from the main street. We attempted to determine what design of collective housing would fit into the area’s rich context. The gently stepped approach to the building is full of nuances that remind us of how the symbolic slope looked in the old days.

The Area - Commuter Town with Hints of Water and Greenery
The building is located in the west part of central Tokyo, in the immediate vicinity of Kugayama station.The area is rimmed with greenery, showing remembrances of a hilly countryside from the past. To the south of the station there are waterways like Kanda River and Tamagawa Aqueduct, and to the north there is a trace of an old pilgrimage trail. The site faces the very gateway to an attractive shopping lane, opening its two sides to the public.

This apartment building is in the Otowa district of Tokyo’s Bunkyo ward, very close to Gokokuji temple, which was established in the Edo era (1603-1868) as a place of prayer for members of the shogunate. Although the neighborhood is located in the city center, it retains traces of that older era.

This project in the Wakamatsucho section of Tokyo’s Shinjuku district transformed an office building into shared housing, where residents have private bedrooms but share common areas, kitchens, and bathrooms. Although the neighborhood is located near universities and busy shopping streets, it has a peaceful atmosphere all its own. When designing a shared house in this area, we gave particular consideration to the type of people who might gather and live there.

The building sits in a neighbourhood shopping lane in Nakanobu, just south to the central district of Tokyo. The town is a mixture of old and new. A grandma’s confectionary and a jazz festival, pensioners among young couples, all share the same streets happily together. The site locates itself in the vicinity of a newsstand, a bathhouse and alike. In order to fit in to this yet humble liveliness of the town, the building’s scale is restrained to those of the neighbouring buildings, 4 stories with only 12 units.

In recent years, various renovation projects have been attempted for a warehouse building, at which a legendary disco, “Juliana's Tokyo”, once existed as a symbol of the Tokyo waterfront in the early 1990s. However, the attic part of the former discotheque on the second floor remained untouched for a long time, since it had a low ceiling height of 2.1m with only 1.7m under the beams, causing an oppressive feeling in the space.

BMA is a three-storied mini fashion business office tenant complex. Its gate-shaped frames line up in slightly shifted way like a series of modern art sculptures. Within these frames, printed glass screens overlap each other, creating unique scenes that changes as you walk in. The slits between gate-shaped frames filter sunlight just like trees and make interior space naturally rich in light and warm atmosphere.
