It is a single family residence located near Kinokawa in Wakayama prefecture. One can feel the rich terrain that extends from the Kino River, with a rich mountain range spreading around. The surroundings are persimmon fields, along with farmhouses, private houses, and barns for farm equipment, thus creating a very calm scenery. A thought about creating a modern barn on the site that was originally a persimmon field and to create an environment for living there, crossed the architect’s mind.

On the 986.54 m² site, a design that considers the temperate nature of Awaji Island as well as the family’s distinctive, nature-conscious approach to all aspects of life, was planned. In response to its’ context, the house combines locals’ timber dwelling construction with a unique form, consisting of a continuous spiral that rises towards the central space.

The project is a residence in Utsunomiya, Japan where climate and temperature greatly fluctuates. Site’s climatic characters were analyzed to introduce natural energy into the house while unifying the interior with the exterior. Taking daily activities as well as light, wind and heat flow into consideration, the best layout resulted in an X-shape. Public spaces are allocated to the north and south segment while private areas are in the east and west segment. A corridor from east to west divides the living and dining room and is enclosed by sliding doors that provides partition if needed.

The strong solar radiation and typhoons are the only phenomena that makes it unpleasant.
