Along the coast of northern Norway lies the island of Kalsholmen: a barren rock in the vast ocean, with a small, white lighthouse at its top. In 1917, a storm destroyed the first lighthouse that was situated on the neighboring island. Following this tragedy, a new lighthouse was built in 1919 on Kalsholmen. Automated and depopulated in 1993, today the lighthouse only welcomes the occasional visitor if the weather allows.

The project is the outcome of an art-in-public-space competition that the municipality of Moss organized in 2018 to revitalize a former industrial area west of the city centre as a part of their 300 year anniversary. The competition was won by Rintala Eggertsson Architects with the proposal FLYT - with several bathing installations placed on floating piers in the sound of Moss. After negotiations with landowners, the project was moved to a nearby location where two of the installations were redesigned to fit with pre-existing piers. A third installation was placed inside the adjacent park to house secondary functions, to strengthen the axis towards the city centre, and to give the park area a more human scale.

The Corte Del Forte project came about after an invitation to Rintala Eggertsson Architects from curators Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara to participate in the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale. We were asked to do a special project at Forte Maghera, a closed down fortress in the Mestre part of Venice. As a gesture towards the local population, the curators decided to take the FREESPACE theme of the biennale out of the ordinary exhibition venues and build a pavilion for social activities in the mainland township of Mestre, thus establishing a better contact between the Biennale visitors and the general public. The choice of the site by the curatorial team was obvious; together with the adjacent San Giuliano Park, Forte Maghera serves as the main recreational area for the local population in Venice.

The architects were given no limitations other than scale which was had to harmonize with the surrounding environment. The following architects were invited; Wang Shu / Amateur Architecture Studio, Smiljan Radic, Sou Fujimoto, Alexander Brodsky, Ensemble Studio, Atelier Vylder Winck Taillieu and our studio Rintala Eggertsson Architects of which all accepted the assignment.

Additionally, the houses have to be properly heated with external energy more than half of the year’s course. Today the construction activity stands alone for more than one third of total global energy and material consumption, well exceeding that of all traffic and transport.

The Gjoevik Care Centre is an institution for juvenile asylum seekers. The centre provides shelter and safety for immigrants under the age of 15 and helps those of them who are struggling with traumatic experiences from famine and conflicts around the world. Our assignment was to create a refuge for the children which also could serve as a place for meaningful activities in their daily lives.

Kirkenes is a city of 6000 inhabitants (ca. 9500 in the larger area) in North East Norway next to Russia. Far enough from the political and economical centers, such as capitals, bigger cities, giant business headquarter and cultural institutions, this Barents city has created its own way of international and dynamic interactivity on a grass root level in necessary everyday survival activity like fishing, constructing and tourism.
