The project in Chr. Tomter's veg in Rælingen represents a careful and deliberate expansion of a modest traditional home into a rich and spatially complex residence for a large and active family. The original house, a small red-painted wooden dwelling with white-framed windows in a popular and romantic vernacular style, was cherished by the owners for its character and familiarity. Their ambition was to preserve that charm while increasing the living area and creating a variety of new spaces suited to contemporary family life.

Buildings constructed primarily for decoration have not always been held in the highest esteem. Yet the folly, at least the kind designed with intention, has a rich history of enhancing garden grounds around the world. The folly in Solliveien stands in the middle of an elongated garden, adjacent to a large, old oak tree. It marks the transition from the everyday hustle and bustle surrounding the residential building at the eastern end of the plot to the tranquility of the pastoral western end. As such, the building also encapsulates a literal gate as part of its eastern wall. Stepping across the threshold leads you into a more serene setting.

There is a long standing tradition for the small retreat in architecture. Historically this kind of building has served as a shelter whilst doing other recreational activities such as hiking, hunting or fishing. Since the days of Thoreau's Walden however, the small retreat, or bolthole, has also been a goal in itself. Typically to escape the stresses of everyday life. For the modern city dweller this may well be a permanent urge.

The shallow, sheltered water, provides temperatures in which it is possible to enjoy a swim. Recently, the area has been poorly maintained and little used. The upgrade has now made it an attractive place for swimming, fishing, and picnics, both for locals and visitors.

This cabin in Ulvik, Western Norway, is a homage to country-road architecture. Important as sources of inspiration are the works of Rudolf Olgiati; with its blend of vernacular architecture and historical design principles, as well as the romantic nationalism paintings of Hans Gude. The latter both in a direct, landscape way and in a more abstract way being within the tradition of design as a method of slow and steady progression.

This house was built on a steep and small site. In order to provide a moderate footprint, and thereby limit the use of concrete for foundations, the building was designed tall and slim. The location of the building towards the western end of the site preserves the views of the neighbours behind, while also providing a warm south-facing garden, sheltered from the westerly winds. The slender building also provides a wide variety of rooms such that a family of five can spread out when needed.

This detached house was built for a young couple in Sunndal who wanted to build a small home they could afford with limited funds. At the same time, they envisioned that their family would grow and they, therefore, wanted the building to be easily expandable, depending on how life developed. The man wanted a romantic and cosy building while his wife, who is a deer hunter, wanted a building that was practical with room for guns and other hunting equipment. Both saw the need to think simple, especially due to economic concerns, but at the same time, they wanted to think about the future so there would be no big leaps for making changes as their family changed.

This is first and foremost a robust heavy duty cabin with high-quality traditional craftsmanship and local timber being used throughout. It uses a traditional layout with a connecting row of different buildings styles and with materials and techniques corresponding to the different indoor functions, the weather conditions they must handle as well as their representative status. The choice of durable materials and a construction to fit the terrain will give the cabin a long life, even in the harsh weather conditions of this high mountain valley. The cabin is practically designed for an active outdoor family with a lot of equipment and the need for a comfortable place to change before and after hiking and skiing trips and not the least to provide a drying area for wet clothes. The building is further tailor-made to transport wet hikers from the glassed-in garage via a laundry area, bathroom and kitchen to a soft sofa by the fireplace with a wide panorama window.

The conversion has been made in order to change an old building with a simple cellar and ten very small rooms to a functional cabin. The owners wanted to retain the traditional and representative facade towards the road and other settlement in the village, however, they wished a more open aspect towards the fjord and mountains. The original building comprised a mix of building materials and included both vertical and horizontal panelling. A large glass panel has now been included in the south-east wall, such that the new kitchen has a completely open aspect to the views in this direction. The south and east facades were previously a collage of materials and colors which the new glass panel is now a part of.

This due to the fact that the original cabin, with exception of the annex, was removed to make way for the new-build. Moreover, the annex was drawn by another architect office and completed a few years ago. We therefore had to design a new whole, which included the annex and yet at the same time created a new building which in itself would provide a satisfactory solution both for site and program

This extension to a single-family house in Stavanger was made to make room for a growing family in a city which has become increasingly dense over the last decades due to the economic boom related to the area's oil industry. The building authorities accepted extension beyond original restrictions but wanted a modern expression, and found common ground with the architects in letting the existing building be preserved as a clear and city-typical shape. Stavanger has also recently been host to the Norwegian Wood project, part of Stavanger 2008 – European City of Culture, and there is reason to believe that the municipal authorities in Stavanger has achieved a more clear and mature architectural policy through the specific focus which that project gave.
