Alpha XXL Mediterranean Mixed Block / Rémy MARCIANO architecte

The project combines three architectural expressions that resonate with the urban challenges of the neighborhood. The first, a structural grid in white concrete, represents a Mediterranean identity and speaks of the thickness, shadow, porosity, rhythm, and framing of the large landscape. It complements the thickness of the loggias and becomes the very language of the architecture. The second is a more restrained composition, allowing the poetic landscape of the area to emerge in the heart of the block. The last expression refers to a domestic scale, seen in the white concrete-roofed houses and the pathways through the project.

The house on the roof talks about scale, the human one of the inhabitant and his housing and those of his built environment. We tried to find coherence and a dialogue with the multiple scales and typologies present in the near context. This work on volumes allowed us to think about continuity with the surrounding context in a concern of accompaniment and transition scales involved.

Transforming the original 1960's building into a “learning center” offers a new venue for student life, meeting and sharing on this Marseilles campus. The site is visually captivating, one of chiseled stone where the wild landscape of the Calanques penetrates into the university campus and offers a context conducive to reading and dreaming, with the heady odor of pine groves wafting about.

The lifestore Essentiel is first a space experiment, where the vault under “la cathedrale de la major”, has been preserved as it is, without masking the many lives, transformations, works, and especially the patina of time, which accumulated traces that we have enlightened with a warm light to sublimate the matter. Inside, the layout reflects the philosophy of the place; be in harmony with nature, give meaning to the pleasures of eating, of dressing, of being find!
