Generations of Hamiltons, Aitchisons and latterly Wilsons occupied Airdrie House and its estate for over five hundred years. The house and its immediate policies were once defined and protected by a belt of lime tress. Inside this green stockade a cultured and enlightened world played out. Its owners were always closely identified with charitable work within the local community. Ultimately in 1919 Sir John Wilson bequeathed Airdrie house and its lands to the people of Airdrie and it subsequently became a maternity hospital.

The project in its entirety is for two new campus buildings (Alloa and Stirling) and a masterplan for the HQ campus in Falkirk, this was won by Reiach and Hall through a competitive interview process involving producing designs to an outline brief. On appointment we commenced a three month brief development period for both new campuses involving interviewing all academic departments along with administration and support staff. The process allowed the evolution of a comprehensive set of briefing documents which were fully understood by all parties and took on board all concerns. It was also an opportunity to get to know the College, its staff and the way it works.

In addressing the design for New Stobhill Hospital’s Ward Extension, we have made a deliberate effort to plan the building as a simple, clearly expressed form. The aim is to achieve a layout which is not only ‘legible’, but will derive much of its architectural quality from the careful consideration and detailing of the external skin.

As well as containing the councils spatial needs the building has an important civic role to play re-using and reinvigorating a protected derelict industrial building, which is located in a slightly forgotten part of the city the new building has begun the process of revitalising this area.

The extension, clad in black charred timber slats, lies as a shadow behind the main house, whose accommodation has been opened up in section and plan to provide a bright, modern living space. The stone cottage is of the landscape, and rests in the landscape, with no conscious boundary or garden.

The new building at Aberdeen Sports Village is a civic building and the product of an enlightened community of client groups. The joint funders of the project - the University of Aberdeen, SportScotland and Aberdeen City Council - worked together with Reiach and Hall during 2005-2007 to carefully define a brief that met their contrasting requirements. The building was procured using a single stage design and build contract which lasted 22 months from contract award to building completion. The building opened to the public in August 2009.

New Stobhill Hospital, designed by Reiach and Hall Architects for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, represents the first of its kind to open in Scotland. Procured under PPP, the brief was for a true ACAD (ambulatory care and diagnostic) facility. The ethos behind the project is that the patient comes first: all medical tests and consultations will be carried out on the same day on the same site if possible, and if a medical procedure is required, the patient will be given a fixed appointment date there and then.
