The design is a creative response to the constraints and opportunities presented by the site, and Dulwich Estate requirements, resulting in an original take on the typical domestic extension project. The clever roof design articulates privacy, light and views to maximize enjoyment of the space and garden for the large family of seven.

A series of stepped levels and angular windows designed by Proctor and Shaw open the ground floor of an Edwardian terrace house onto a quiet leafy garden in South West London. The clients charged Proctor and Shaw with the task of connecting the ground floor to the 1.2m dropped rear garden, challenging the architects’ to bring as much light and height into the new extension as possible.

This 3 bedroom family house is set in 4 acres at the edge of a Lancashire village. The brief required a house that was laid out over 2 storeys but could accommodate inclusive lifetime homes standards for ground floor living, and whilst open plan in layout could retain the function of accommodating distinct rooms. In response, a series of interconnecting living spaces link though disappearing corner sliding doors to create an open plan ground floor, that opens on three sides to outdoor garden ‘rooms’ that capture light at different times of the day.A second storey adds a master bedroom suite with framed views of the hills beyond.
