Powerhouse Company, RED Company, Being Development, and DELVA Landscape Architecture & Urbanism have just completed a remarkable reinvention of Hugh Maaskant's Brutalist Bunker building in Eindhoven. The meticulously restored horizontal concrete structure has been transformed by the addition of a new 100-meter-high residential tower. Before the ambitious adaptation, the original and much-loved Bunker was long the center of student life in the city. Now preserved for the future, the Bunker Tower and the beautiful surrounding park are additions that effectively energize the entire area.

The new, nearly energy-neutral complex is situated on a plot of land measuring 33 by 33 meters, within the forested campus of Tilburg University. The building accommodates a foyer, 1 auditorium, 13 lecture halls, and self-study spaces for approximately 1,000 students. Its distinctive architecture pays homage to the monumental Cobbenhagen Building on the campus while also serving as a model for the highly sustainable ambitions of university campuses in Europe.

Jakoba Mulderhuis is situated in a striking location, on the corner of Wibautstraat and Mauritskade, and by the edge of the historical inner city on the Singelgracht canal. Together with Benno Premselahuis, a listed building on the other side of Wibautstraat, Jakoba Mulderhuis forms a gateway to the city. The high-rise structures on both sides of the street lend the setting a monumental quality that connects the architectural elements in the vicinity. Jakoba Mulderhuis comprises a slimline tower (54 meters tall, 13 stories) and a low-rise block (33 meters, 6 stories) on Mauritskade. The positioning of the tower constitutes a work of art from an urban planning perspective. Widening Wibautstraat has created a compelling entrance to the city center.

Part of a row of one-off houses for individual clients, the brick of the ground-floor front facade was a given of the area plan, a feature that connects all the houses in the neighborhood. We pierced the brick wall, which extends on two sides, to frame various views, and on top added a Jura limestone box cut by panels of glass and wooden slats and dotted with projecting balconies. Even while our villa protects our clients’ privacy, it embraces the great outdoors.

Powerhouse Company’s design for a technology museum and reception center for a new neighborhood in Chengdu, China, is much more than an exuberant landmark. In addition to its obvious aesthetic appeal and cultural program, the fluid-structure incorporates a spectacular public space – an undulating rooftop trail. The municipality of Assen, therefore, asked for a transparent and inviting station on the regional level, which would at the same time remove the barrier of the tracks on the neighborhood level. Powerhouse Company and De Zwarte Hond designed the new station as an all-sided building – connective, transparent and sustainable – that is equally inviting from every angle. The impressive triangular geometry of the roof gives the building a strong identity, organizes the program and also makes a connection with the urban context.

Clean Lines and Round Corners. The state-of-the-art office building is located on the Taurusavenue, near the historical monument of the Amsterdam Defense Line, listed as Unesco World Heritage since 1996. The exterior aspect of the building, with its clean lines and transparent character, was designed to match this special context. A grid of light-colored Terrazzo cladding frames the large openings. The transition from the building to the natural surrounding is mediated by the rounded corners of the building volume, that soften the geometric grid of the facade. To realize these perfectly rounded corners in the building, Powerhouse Company collaborated with Saint Gobain to develop the spectacular-size round glass that contributes to the unique character of the project.

From the outside, the building is characterized by an elegant geometric clarity. The full-perimeter overhangs, whose main function is sheltering the workspace from direct sunlight, create the distinctive horizontality of the facade. The entrance of the building, consisting of an oversized, ASICS-branded custom-manufactured blue glass wall, is highlighted by a deep recess in the main facade. The presence of double-height transparency on one side and a recess with a green terrace on the other breaks the symmetrical composition of the simple horizontal overhangs and central position of the entrance.
