Located in Sydney’s inner-west, this small 1882 worker’s cottage was given a large transformation resulting in a home that provides generous living areas filled with light for contemporary family living. The brief was to convert the typical L-shaped layout of the original house into one that maximized the site whilst respecting the parameters.

Tamarama House / Porebski Architects

Located on a corner site on the hills overlooking Tamarama Beach the design allows the house to be a sculpture on the site. With stone forming the base a sculptured curved fa§ade creates the lighter upper levels. The building is beautifully modulated by the use of timber batten extensions forming bay windows against the curvaceous white render masonry which all sit wonderfully with the Will Dangar designed gardens.

Situated on the shore of Pearl Beach, an area where the bush meets the coast, the Block House is a secluded escape designed to respond to its surroundings. Pearl Beach is formed by two coastal headlands and is defined by eucalypt bush to the north and south and a rainforest to the west. Contextually the house relates to the sandstone cliffs and caves of the surrounding headlands and heavy waves on the beach, which in turn influence the form and materiality of the building.
