Located near the center of Diksmuide, two sturdy blocks emphasize the entrance to the ‘Tuinwijk’ subdivision project. According to the local authorities, this is the last of the city’s infill projects, one on a largely undeveloped site adjacent to an existing green, garden neighborhood. The new subdivision consists of a traditional ensemble of (half)open and closed buildings: two-story houses with side and front gardens where cars are parked.

For decades, an irregular, funnel-shaped plot of land served as the driveway to a storage space at the back of the site. It was a narrow, open slot in the streetscape, fronted by a shabby gate. Nevertheless, the east-west orientation and 8 meter wide building line offered quality and space to erect a new terrace house. What’s more, by demolishing the storage space, a square walled garden with a great deal of privacy was created. The floor plan was developed as a trapezium so as to deal with the increasingly narrower form of the site and the kink halfway. This way the interior spaces all have the same internal angles and pointed corners are avoided.

This noteworthy home lies in an area designated for weekend residences. The goal was to build a holiday house that would blend into the forest surroundings as much as possible. To limit the impact on the natural environment, the construction rests on 11 narrow poles. The building thus floats about half a meter from the ground and can be moved in its entirety. In time, another terrace can be created on two extra poles.

The house is located directly opposite the Horst Chapel in Schoten (B), on a site that once accommodated the 19th century rectory of the chapel. The property formed a part of the Vordenstein Castle domain and was one of the last remains of a place of pilgrimage originating in the 15th century. The Horst Chapel and the entire adjacent Vordenstein domain are of historical interest, both culturally and in terms of landscape.

Four families, firm friends, had a vision: a collaborative housing project within cycling distance of the city centre, with shared functions and a shared garden but maintaining sufficient privacy. A former police station in Deurne (Antwerp) offered them the space they were looking for. The building was converted into four equal family homes. The designers placed an extra dividing wall that cuts through the original middle bay. Thanks to that intervention, the internal arrangement and typical brickwork architecture of the front facade could be preserved. To grant the four dwellings a similar surface area, the outer units received an extra extension on the first floor. So each dwelling has a slightly different structure.
