Budapest Corvinus University, Hungary's oldest institution dedicated to economics, is located on the Pest side of Budapest in beautiful 19th-century buildings. The university had long aspired to expand with a modern building, but this wasn't feasible within the dense urban fabric of Pest. Finally, the former State Administration College on the opposite bank of the Danube, within easy walking distance, was selected for redevelopment. Recycling the existing structure allowed the building to be constructed economically, sustainably, and in a forward-thinking spirit, resulting in one of the country's most advanced university buildings.

The Great Rock was created during the major reconstruction of the Zoo between 1909 and 1912, based on the specialist instructions of the Zoo Construction Committee in the capital.

Relation
The final building outline was determined by the scale and proportion of the sorrounding buildings. We didn’t want to form blocks that oppress their environment. Our primary aim was to find an acceptable, proportioned building form, that keeps the relative regulations, and we connected the most optimal number of apartments to this form. The sorrounding buildings and environment inspired the volume of the building. The existing firewalls on the location determined the volume from two sides: on one hand they are identifying characteristics of the site, on the other hand they ’section’ certain forms and buildings, therefore finishing these were one of the tasks. Instead of building something aside, we added the form to the site.
