A is a Japonesque Chef Restaurant located on the second floor of Azrieli-Sarona Tower in Tel Aviv. The restaurant’s chef, Yuval Ben-Neriah, envisioned it as a culinary institute. It was destined to offer a place to experience rich, timeless knowledge well blended with the chef’s personal interpretation and daring culinary innovations. His idea to fuse Japanese and Western cultures into a slick lively elegance drove us to draw upon classic architectural idioms of form and matter in these two cultures, and re-sculpt them to create a calm yet assertive space and experience.

This corner house is located at the meeting point of a pair of roads where it reveals an intriguing entrance façade. The flat roof extends the full length of the structure and folds into side walls to seamlessly enwrap the interior space. When looking at the house from the side, the walls confuse the eye, making it impossible to perceive where they begin and end and resulting in a unified and continuous façade. This structural uniformity is further enhanced by the uniform materiality of the roof and the solid walls, which are constructed of exposed concrete.

Adjacent to the side of the hill rock on the edge of ancient Jaffa Port, this apartment is a collection of 300-year-old spaces built around a central patio. The basis of the concept - searching for a stitch between Ottoman architecture and the contemporary architecture of the studio, and the connection between ancient building traditions and innovative technologies - such as glazed arches without divisions in axial opening and roofs containing modern infrastructure.

The sunken yard – usually meant to allow light into a basement floor and mostly placed at the fringes of the plot – is this house’s central motif. Measuring 25m long, 5m wide and almost 7m high, it sits in the heart of the structure and divides the house into three sections: one with the private bedroom facing the street; one with the living room and master bedroom facing the backyard; and between them, a section with the internal double-level yard that extends the entire length of the building.

A private family home located in an urban environment. The façade of the house is in fact a kind of sealed “box” composed of two large volumes. One horizontal façade is made up of a white aluminum skin with a repetitive graphic pattern in which, here and there, in a seemingly random way, cut-out openings allow a glimpse into the house during the day and the filtering out of artificial light at night. The upper volume is constructed of exposed architectural concrete to create a tension against the lower volume. Designed to create a sense of flight, the upper volume is positioned on a diagonal and emphasizes the contrast between it and the perforated white aluminum façade. The envelope facing the street forms a minimalistic and polished object that accentuates the monastic and condensed language chosen by the designer. The street-facing façade stands out because of its restraint, successfully fulfilling its purpose of creating a precise and sleek appearance.

The story of the J House originates from its surroundings. The view from the street to the entrance reveals a resolute stone path, a sidewalk, asphalt and an outdoor wall, all forming one complete composition. After a moment, tension is created by the realization of the slope downward from the street and the ambitious reach of the roof upwards - a roof noted by its whiteness, long window and sense of levity.

The skyline - the meeting of earth and heaven - is the Archimedean point in every swath of architecture that orients the building in its surrounding. Whether it be built in a dense urban fabric, on a high mountain or a narrow, deep canyon - each building is measured by its sky. Classical architecture that developed within the bosom of the church, aspired toward the sublime, the dimensions were propelled upwards by way of vertical windows and tall columns. In contrast, however, modern architecture, particularly residential constructions, see the skyline as a backdrop of human creativity, a horizontal emphasis on the buildings’ dimensions or even as a mere tool serving human needs.

A line on a dark background short or long, thin or thick sometimes expresses orientation or movement, at times convergence or divergence, pain and freedom, connection or physical repulsion.
