Closely hemmed in by four neighbours and with a narrow street frontage, this new home for a young family on a sub-divided block makes the most of its patchwork setting. The local character is highly variable with a range of materials and styles, and single- and double-storey homes that accommodate families from diverse backgrounds.

Sited on nearly 2 hectares, this house takes advantage of its secluded and elevated position, capturing views across rolling hills to the Swan Valley, Perth CBD, and coastal plain. Positioned on the brow of a hill and located among mature trees to reduce its visual impact – and constructed with rammed earth and rural vernacular materials – it blends into the landscape.

Conceptual framework: Underlying principles, values, core ideas, and philosophy of the project. This two-room workers' cottage has been substantially expanded to suit a growing family. Our response was informed by the site’s challenging topography; the compromised northern aspect; the potential to capture district views; and privacy and connection issues to the street. The design provides flexibility within a strong sense of spatial order, via a series of spaces and levels that are both separate and connected, via a central courtyard and visually permeable staircases.

Our clients wanted a down-sizer home to accommodate, where they could age-in-place and occasionally accommodate their two adult children. This new house replaces a modest, single storey attached dwelling – one of a triplex built in the 1980s – and occupies a prominent position on a roundabout. They asked for something ‘iconic’, so we created a building that makes a significant contribution to its immediate setting, recognizing the site’s role as unofficial gateway to the local shopping precinct.

The design grew from the client’s desire to ‘re-set’ each time he returned from work. He would arrive by car straight from the airport, without the time to adequately slot back into society. Our client was a single FIFO worker at the start of the project, who wanted a laid-back and robust sanctuary back home. He would arrive by car from the airport after a month off-shore and wanted the house to be instrumental in readjusting his mindset back into an on-shore, city-based existence for the ensuing month. The home needed to allow a gradual adjustment. Nothing too abrupt. Connection with Fremantle, but also plenty of privacy and dimly lit space to enjoy solitude. A place that was gentle on the senses, yet also engaging. Together with the client, we devised an entrance sequence to perform the initial reset.

Our project comprises alterations and additions to an existing 1890's duplex disconnected from its garden by a 1.5m level difference and an inconveniently placed bathroom. The brief was to forge a new relationship with the outside, and to replace an existing deck and pergola with a flexible space that was neither fully internal nor external.
