Upon taking on the project and construction of the Village House, we encountered a building formed by the joining of two semi-detached houses, "regularized" by a superficial intervention that did not address the essential issues of the space. The initial diagnosis revealed a fragmented configuration, with compartments lacking a clear purpose, underutilized areas, and a staircase adapted to reach the upper floor, highlighting the lack of continuity between the parts. There were overlapping uses, unclear passages, and timid natural light that entered, unable to structure daily life. Our starting point was to restore logic and meaning to the whole, transforming two disconnected halves into a single organism.

The Península Arquitetura office developed the project and carried out the construction management for the renovation of Casa Ottoni, a residence designed in the 1970s by architects Dácio and David Ottoni, located in the Alto de Pinheiros neighborhood in São Paulo. The main objective of the intervention was to enhance the existing architectural features, respecting the original design while creating ample, integrated, and functional spaces to meet the needs and desires of the new residents.

We were called to order the renovation of this house for a couple and their three children. Their professional life, focused on the financial market, demands a lot of energy, in a stressful and bureaucratic environment. They wanted a drastic change in lifestyle, so they asked us for a house that was fully integrated, with soft colors, light materials, and totally connected to green.

The open floor plan and the raw finishes provided by the construction company were identified as potential elements in the development of the project. The concrete slab and pillars, as well as the polished concrete floor, were kept natural. Since the beginning of the project, there was a strategy to intervene as little as possible in the construction and solve the spaces desired by the residents through the addition of only a few elements. A bathroom was built, transforming the dormitory into a suite, and some carpentry and metalwork elements were designed to meet the functional demands.

The original project signed by the architects Sylvio Sawaya and Edimilson Tinoco dates back to 1972. Over the years and after successive interventions, the construction gradually became uncharacterized. In 2017 we made a remodeling proposal respecting the main elements of the original project and added a leisure annex, resulting from the dialogue and demands of the current owners. The intervention in the house had three approaches: remodeling of the leisure area and garden, recovery of original elements of the project that were degraded and occasional reforms inside and outside the house.
