Kaomai Tea Barn is a continuously adaptive-reuse project within Kaomai Estate 1955, the revitalized project of a multi-decade tobacco processing plant estate in Chiang Mai. In 2018, Kaomai Estate 1955 was awarded the 2018 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation in New Design in the Heritage Contexts category. As part of the incremental plan to unite new commercial programs in the estate, the project location is carefully respected, yet links the surrounding ecology, landscape, and existing buildings together. As a result, the design envisions Kaomai Tea Barn as a connection platform to link Kaomai Avenue, the Amphitheater, and Kaomai Cafe both horizontally and vertically.

Mekong House is carefully crafted to express to earth owner’s personality, the rich environment of the Mekong River, and a sense of simple vernacular architecture. The strong horizontal line of the house elevation reflects the stunning line of the serene Mekong River. To create a tranquil atmosphere, all the architectural elements are designed to be simple, humble, honest, and straightforward.

Kaomai Museum / PAVA architects

Kaomai Museum is an adaptive-reused project within Kaomai Estate 1955, the revitalized project of sixty-three-year old tobacco processing plant estate in Chiang Mai, once a glorious local community’s economic center. Recently, this project was awarded by the 2018 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation in New Design in Heritage Contexts category. PAVA architects designed the museum by considering “the site as a museum”, in which contains the valuable historical and natural heritage. Therefore, Kaomai Estate 1955 is narrated by the “histo-eco museum” routes.
