The Luanda Waterpoints project improved and adapted three water access points on the outskirts of the city. The project aims to show how small-scale interventions and low-cost solutions can have an impact on the quality of life of disadvantaged populations. The interventions favour local labour and encourage the reuse of materials. With this in mind, we visited informal, open-air markets in Luanda and found a series of metal modules that were originally used in guardrails on urban elements in the city centre. These modules were purchased and adapted for use in the waterpoints project.

‘Escadinhas Footpaths’ is a project that links architecture, art, and the natural world. It is a network of pedestrian footpaths linking the hilly neighborhood of Monte Xisto to the banks of the River Leça in Matosinhos. The initiative is intended to demonstrate the added value that low-budget projects can bring to more ‘hidden’, neglected urban spaces in our cities.

Casa Zaire is a tiny house situated at the rear of a modernist building in Rua do Zaire, Porto. The transformation of this tiny hidden house, where the porter of the main building once lived, has brought it back to life. Its isolated position in relation to the street and to urban life led us to interpret this small building as an autonomous ‘object’.

Family Lar Apartment / Paulo Moreira Architectures

The apartment was renovated during the COVID-19 pandemic. This meant that the construction process had to be adapted for safety reasons, especially as the site had no outside space. In the hall, an area of transition from outdoors to indoors, a small sink and a shoe rack were installed to encourage new domestic habits.

São Felix Apartment / Paulo Moreira Architectures

The ocean is the most striking feature of the landscape surrounding the Sao Felix Apartment. The breathtaking views are accentuated by a rather sober intervention in terms of material expression. The common areas in the apartment (living room, dining room and kitchen) are arranged around a standalone volume, which performs a structural function.
