Rehabilitation and Restoration of the Monastery of São Miguel de Refojos / Paulo Freitas e Maria João Marques Arquitectos

Construction of the current Monastery of São Miguel de Refojos began in 1755, on the site of a pre-existing 17th-century church. The Church was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1933. It is partially occupied by the municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto, which is responsible for safeguarding, promoting, conserving, and enhancing this remarkable property, while encouraging tourism and attracting new visitors. Despite having undergone several rehabilitation and restoration interventions over nearly three centuries of existence, its poor state of conservation prompted the local authority to undertake improvement works. The objective of this intervention is to enhance the architectural and heritage value of the complex by installing the municipality's One-Stop Customer Service Center (SAU) on the ground floor of the west wing, restoring and rehabilitating the roofs of both the Church and the east wing of the Monastery, and restoring the window and door openings and facade paint.

In the Historic Center of Porto, an opportunity appears to develop a contemporary dwelling capable of being urbanistically integrated into the morphology of the city. Owned by the same owners as the next-door building, the project was thought out in a way that could create new spaces for extending their own dwelling, as well as adding two new studios. The challenge was to create a building that would adapt to the accentuated gap of the vacant lot located in Rua da Vitória, one of the oldest streets in the city, and to take advantage of the privileged view of the urban landscape of this World Heritage Site.
