In an inner-city context the spatial qualities of private dwellings depend on the degree of privacy. On the street-side outside the house, you wish to store your bike when coming home from work and to protect yourself from the rain while searching for your keys. You may also long for a place where to lean on when talking to your neighbours.

The recently completed housing scheme by Rotterdam based pasel.kuenzel architects is part of the urban masterplan “Waterstad Goese Schans” by West 8. Located at the fringe of the medieval city of Goes, the Netherlands, the project comprises 34 dwellings and accomplishes the first phase in a large scale urban transfromation process of the city's former port area. Low rise and high density, as well as clear orientation and an individual address for all inhabitants were the guiding parameters for the architects, in order to enhance the residents identification with the new neighborhood.

This remarkable urban villa, designed by Dutch architects Ralf Pasel and Frederik Künzel, is located on the site of a former industrial area, in the heart of the Dutch city of Leiden. The spatial idea of this urban residence is based on a 3 metre high, all-embracing wooden screen that surrounds the whole site enclosing as well the building volumes as the building voids of the patio and garden.
