Stone and oak bring light back into an old farmhouse. With the intense Mediterranean light and surrounded by olive trees, it is not a surprise if a family chose to move to the countryside. This project sought to satisfy their wishes while respecting the essence of Mediterranean architecture. Due to regulatory requirements, it was only possible to renovate the existing house without extending its surface area. Without modifying its perimeter, the thick opaque walls are opened up, giving a new sensation of spaciousness and lightness. The existing roof is extended over the old storage room, preserving the ceramic gable roof. This creates a new luminous space, higher than the old house interior. The living room, dining room, and kitchen are located in a common space. A large window takes advantage of the north orientation that protects it from direct sunlight.

The coronavirus pandemic has accelerated transformations, such as teleworking or sustainable mobility, that are here to stay. Other alterations may be temporary, but 2020 will be remembered as the year when we enjoyed the interior of our homes the most. This Project consists of the integral renovation of a home in Petrer (Alicante). The existing building occupied a constructed surface of 138m2, 19 of which correspond to a porch. By law, this surface could not be extended and consequently the project needed to be based on an exact alteration of the existing building.

This Project is based on an integral reform of an existing house in the center of Petrer (Alicante, Spain). The arrangement is distributed as follows: parking space on the ground floor, day zone on the first floor and night zone on the second floor. The existing façade has been modified with surgical care, removing only the brick parapets on the front of the balcony and unifying the two window openings that connect the living room with its terrace.
