Although it is a church building, we tried to restrain religious symbols from being used excessively and rethought the forms and spaces that were habitually applied. Instead of installing a large cross high in the sky, we placed a small and humble cross on the floor.

The Site on the outskirts of the city was exceptionally impressive with red soil. A small achromatic chapel was built against the backdrop of oak and bamboo forests. The whole form is the simple basic volume of the square. Each side has a depth and forms layers, giving it a rich three-dimensional feeling.

What to build and What to keep. A 50-year-old chapel. It is an old building that leaks when it rains and there is no insulation to block the cold wind in the middle of winter. We needed a new building, but at the same time, we had to think about which parts should be kept as before. A stone wall surrounds the site.

Site plan. Late autumn. Rural village outside the city. I visited the site where shabby farm houses and vinyl houses were scattered here and there. It was a place where the water flowing from the mountain made dizzy mud and was full of weeds. It was a distracting landscape far from the romantic rural scene.

The biggest feature of church architecture that differs from that of other uses is that the owner of the church is the "many". Among the countless demands, what position should the architect take? Full approval was unfeasible. The architect should respect the client's opinions but inform them that there is a better direction. It should be said that not only functions, fiances, but also that it can maintain a noble dignity and consideration for its neighbors. Communication and Persuasion are also skills for architects. Sometimes architects need firmness, sometimes need tenderness. Taejeon Beautiful Church is located in a corner of the new city.

In most cases, the first impression of the site decides the main direction of the work. It is the most essential moment to decide what part of the site will be occupied, and what posture will be taken toward the city. The first impression of the site for Sunggwang Church was a model of the disordered aspect in the suburb of a large city. Because of all sorts of small commercial facilities and plants, the form, material, and sign were chaotic.

On the edge of the land to the west, the park is close. The park is beautiful when looking from the lot. It is a small piece of land with the church having a single floor according to the regulations.The beginning of design process with given regulations first focused on the path leading to the the chaple.

The concrete box containing minimum of the architectural elements formulates its own quality independent from and incomparable to overtly decorative architecture. So it appears to be simple, sleek, and solid.
