Gallery / Salon H is located in a residential area, developed in the 70s for local factory workers.

A pre-war map showed the Matsubara village to have been quite densely populated, with more than 80 houses, surrounded by fields. Since then, a high-growth period, the development of large-scale roads in the suburbs, and poor access to railway stations have meant that automobiles are the main means of transport for residents

This project is the administration building for a small construction firm from Tottori, a nearby small city. In the midst of the recent pandemic, the firm opted to relocate its office to a nearby rural area. The new location is abundant in flora and fauna, with small-scale agricultural buildings and a vista dominated by the nearby extinct volcano Mt Daisen. The firm hoped that this setting would provide an escape from the dreariness of city lockdown for themselves and their team.

Just as the ancient art of hairdressing took place in the cave, a hollowed-out existing 1980s concrete structure provides the appropriate setting for a hair-salon: a tough, utilitarian space for cutting, grooming, coloring, washing; renewal. This project converts a small printing firm to a hair salon on the ground level of a mixed-use commercial/residential building in the educational precinct of Shimizu Dani, Osaka.

Due to an extremely tight budget, the project was procured in a somewhat unconventional manner, namely that it was built from completely salvaged building materials, painstaking researched and sourced. The project was largely designed in response to the availability of these found, low-cost, and surplus building materials. The architect Yudai Niimori worked closely with the project builder (and collegial contractors around Osaka) to source waste and off-cut material from various construction sites. Often, this salvaged material was repurposed for the requirements of House / Lab
