In the hope of preserving this urban heritage, a number of architects are now attempting to give these homes a new lease on life.

A new home for two families brings new life to a quiet Montréal neighborhood dating back to the 50’s and 60’s. In its own, unassuming way, this recent building is part of a movement that is gradually transforming Montréal’s traditional streets, as a growing number of young families are moving in. They are looking for friendly surroundings, but also for a contemporary way of life.

BLACK BOX II is the latest in a series of tiny additions impacting existing architecture in a big way. Conceived as a jewelry box, large openings blur the interior/exterior boundary, revealing its treasure of fine cabinetmaking work within through the playful use of complementary surface materials. The BLACK BOX II addition is covered with large plates of iridescent, black fiber cement board, with a perforated motif for the loggia, finely assembled with matching rivets. In contrast, blond wood and light porcelain and ceramics, illuminate the interior. When large windows fold open to incorporate the garden into the home, interior and exterior materials interact to connect spaces. Inside, oak wood paneling covers the walls and ceiling of the shed, while a lattice of western red cedar lines the exterior alcove.

T House, a country retreat in Quebec’s Eastern Townships was designed by NDA for a busy urban Montreal family. It is inspired from the writings of Pliny the Younger, whose sensual descriptions of two large Italian villas dating back to antiquity stimulate the imagination and compels us to contemplate one’s place in the surrounding landscape.
