The site of this project was a vacant, untouched plot of land next to the existing suburban residence. Fortunately, the surrounding of the site is under the management of the city authority as a green space, and it will be kept as it is in the future--therefore the client hoped to maintain the feel of nature in their daily lives, while enjoying the time spending on gardening or having meals outside of the house.

This is a house for a family of four, situated on one of the lots for sale at a newly developed area in "satoyama" or semi-natural woodlands. The land is too large for a simple program requested by the client: a private house with a garage for two cars.

This project involved rebuilding a single plot with an existing wooden, one-storey detached house located in a quiet residential neighborhood. As many of the other buildings in the area had also been recently refurbished, we wanted to preserve the scale of the house and the midcentury vintage and slightly anachronistic character of the neighborhood in a new, updated form.

This project was a residential building for a husband-and-wife couple in rural Ibaraki prefecture. The area surrounding the generously-sized plot was not heavily built up, giving the site a calm sense of privacy without too much of the noise, threat of crime and other stresses associated with the city. The adjacent areas consisted of a mix of fields and houses, many of which were located on plots of land whose boundaries were not clearly demarcated from each other. With these conditions in mind, we decided to create a home that would consist of “an open space with ambiguous borders and boundaries.”
