An international school that provides a nursery and after-school program designed on the campus of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. The site was designated at the end of a tree-lined avenue extending from the university’s central plaza. It was a hill-like place with a height difference of about 2 meters, and I was told that the hill was made of leftover soil that had been piled up when the student dormitory next to it was built. The site was segregated by a surrounding chain link fence, and it seemed detached from the entire campus as being located at the far end, where weeds grow so thick that you might hesitate to enter in the summer. There was a cut in the center that divided the hill into two, and a smoking area was set up at the back, probably because it was out of sight from the surrounding area.

This kindergarten opened in 1979 and is located on a hill in the Tsukui district of Sagamihara City, a commuter town of Tokyo. It has accepted many children over the years and has become a household name in the local community. As the existing kindergarten building started to have various issues due to aging and having gone through a series of expansions and renovations, it was decided to build a new one as part of the future-oriented strategy. The Tsukui district is the largest in Sagamihara City, with many rivers and lakes surrounded by mountains and low population density. Since many kindergarten children use the shuttle bus, I tried driving those routes, but the area covered was too large to go around in a matter of an hour. There is a bus route set up just to pick up one child waiting in the pickup point, which seems too much but understandable considering the fact that houses are too far apart for children to see each other and that many children wish to have kindergarten shuttle bus to see many friends there.

When designing a housing complex, it is a typical formula to put all the housing units under the same conditions as much as possible. However, in this project, this formula applied only to units on the second and third floor. A passage which needed to be paved on the side of the building reduced the floor area of units on the first floor and restriction of daylight made it impossible to make bedroom or living room. Diagonal limit on the fourth floor reduced the volume of the building, thus increased dead space, and made it impossible to extend exterior stairs.
