After the original thatched farmhouse was mostly destroyed by a fire, the client requested that the new additions to their private game farm outside Rustenburg, South Africa, to have hardy elements that cannot readily catch fire. The new design also had to relate to the site and incorporate the remnants of the original structure. In essence, the goal was for the old and new elements to integrate seamlessly.

The principal requirement of the project consisted of creating a retreat for its occupants from a hectic urban lifestyle. The client obtained an underutilised 35 hectare farm outside of Pretoria with magnificent views. The house had to have a strong relationship with its immediate landscape and living spaces had to embrace the surroundings, breaking away from conventional space allocation.

Neighbouring residential property which contained an old derelict Pretoria house. The concept proposed to repurpose the existing house and freestanding garage as a conference room and café at minimal cost, disturbance and time. The surviving elements of the building were exposed and uncovered to serve as the backbone of the new design - to support new interventions and additions. Design and materials were selected to stitch together the old and new fabric and transform the existing buildings to facilitate a variety of social spaces, whilst making the most of Pretoria’s favourable climate.
