MVRDV design adds glass fins with fluid curves to the façade of Tiffany & Co.'s flagship store in Beijing — A new Tiffany & Co. flagship store has opened in the Taikoo-Li Sanlitun commercial neighbourhood in Beijing, with a façade of curving, translucent glass fins that add an ethereal presence to the building. With its flowing shapes inspired by the masterpieces of jewellery designer Elsa Peretti, the Beijing store is the fifth in a series of façade designs created by MVRDV for Tiffany, introducing a new design motif that reflects the pursuit of innovative materials and expressive three-dimensional form that characterises each design in the series.

Wooden Wonders: MVRDV's wooden pavilion and exhibition celebrates the past, present, and future of timber craft in Chiayi — For the 321st anniversary celebrations of the founding of Chiayi City in Taiwan, MVRDV has completed a temporary timber pavilion housing an exhibition on manufacture, craft, and construction with wood. Located across from Chiayi's city hall, the Wooden Wonders pavilion encloses a square courtyard, with the shape of its perimeter structure informed by deep research into the city's timber construction heritage. The project will be on display throughout Chiayi's anniversary celebrations, from December 12–28, providing a space for residents to gather, learn about the city's heritage and discuss the city's "timber future".

The project serves as both a visitor destination and an event space that takes advantage of the spectacular natural beauty of central China. Designed to blend into nature while also standing out as a beacon when seen from the plains below, the structure of earth-covered timber arches takes a telescopic shape, drawing visitors to the expansive viewing window and balcony that projects out over the slope.

At Irwell Bank Road in Singapore, two 36-story residential towers have been completed, with a lively, pixelated façade design contributed by MVRDV. Taking as a base the highly efficient, prefabricated, modular building design by Singapore-based ADDP Architects, MVRDV's variegated façade adds liveliness to the buildings' external appearance and highlights the green communal spaces on the buildings' 24th floor and roof. The design is the latest in MVRDV's oeuvre to show that efficiency and cost-effectiveness can happily coexist with character and individuality.

The design makes a cohesive urban space out of a collection of buildings from different time periods, reusing the existing structures to minimize carbon emissions, and introducing an unmistakable identity with its bright orange circulation elements. Offering possibilities for shopping, eating, drinking, skateboarding, rock climbing, and visiting exhibitions and events, or simply relaxing by the riverside, the area has already become an award-winning and popular destination for Shanghai residents and visitors alike.

For the Time Space Existence exhibition in Venice, MVRDV has collaborated with Metadecor, Airshade, and Alumet, among others, to create the SOMBRA pavilion. With its shape inspired by heliodon devices, for the next six months this "ode to the sun" will provide a dynamic shading structure in the European Cultural Centre's Giardini Marinaressa. The SOMBRA pavilion – its name a portmanteau of the Latin words for sun (sol) and shade (umbra) – serves as a demonstration vehicle for an innovative technology: kinetic building elements that work based exclusively on passive physical principles, without using electronics or motors.

A machine for storytelling: MVRDV's Portlantis offers visitors a new perspective on the Port of Rotterdam. For centuries, the city of Rotterdam and its port have grown together in a symbiotic relationship. In the 21st century, the Port is embarking on one of the most significant changes in its history, as it transitions to sustainable, low-energy operations. How can this change be experienced by the public, making sense of the complexity of the port? Opening today, the MVRDV-designed Portlantis is a visitor and exhibition centre for the Port of Rotterdam located at the port's western-most point. Comprising a stack of five rotated exhibition spaces, the building stands out from its surroundings with its crimson-red public route from the dunes to its rooftop, while offering spectacular views in all directions of the North Sea, the coastline, and the port.

The creation of Tripolis, a trio of idiosyncratic office buildings of 11,000, 8,000, and 6,000 square meters, was inextricably linked to Van Eyck's masterpiece, the Amsterdam Orphanage. Completed in 1960, the orphanage was one of the most important projects of the Structuralist movement, yet by 1986 it was already threatened with demolition. A successful international campaign was launched to save the orphanage, and the municipality of Amsterdam offered the adjacent land to the developer – on the condition that Aldo and Hannie van Eyck should design the new office complex. In 1994, their new design was completed, and thus Tripolis began its life as the symbolic savior of the orphanage.

Working within this masterplan on the outskirts of Arnhem, MVRDV and KondorWessels Projecten have also completed three sustainable residential buildings providing a total of 21 homes.
Pixel, the 85,000-square-metre mixed-use development designed by MVRDV in Abu Dhabi, is now complete. The complex features 525 apartments together with shops, offices, and amenities, taking an innovative approach to designing residential complexes in the Emirates. Central to this effort is the communal plaza at the heart of the development, where the seven towers “break down” into formations of terraces and bay windows, complete with shading screens of tiles in 14 subtle pastel colors inspired by the appearance of a pearl. Pixel is the first project completed in Makers District, a new development on Abu Dhabi’s Reem Island that developer IMKAN bills as the new heart of Abu Dhabi – a creative counterpart to the city’s cultural hub on the nearby Saadiyat Island. The design capitalizes on the innovative, cosmopolitan spirit of Makers District to offer an approach to living that is rare in the United Arab Emirates – with an emphasis on identity and a strong sense of place, an outdoor lifestyle, community spirit, and modest yet striking materials.

MVRDV was selected to both design and curate the Netherlands pavilion, which is located at the very center of the expo in Taipei World Trade Center’s Hall 1. The design is composed of three adjoining circles wrapped in images of Dutch landscapes. This creates three spaces to represent past, present, and future, allowing the pavilion to reflect on the 400-year relationship, to present modern-day Dutch design and sustainability expertise, to elaborate on ideals of diversity and inclusivity – and of course, to showcase and explore a wide range of Dutch literature.

Together with co-architects HS-Architekten, MVRDV has turned a dated office building from the 1990s into an eye-catching entrance marker for Atelier Gardens in Berlin. Now bright yellow, the building is completed with a new living roof, and a sustainable timber rooftop pavilion and terrace, accessible via a grand external staircase.

In the heart of Albania’s capital city, a new kind of cultural hub is now open and accessible to the public. The Pyramid of Tirana, originally built as a museum dedicated to the communist dictator Enver Hoxha, has been dramatically transformed by MVRDV. Reusing the concrete structure, the Pyramid is now an open sculpture in a new park. The park and the sculpture are home to an ensemble of colorful boxes, scattered in and around the original building that now houses cafés, studios, workshops, start-up offices, incubators, festivals, and classrooms where Albanian youth will learn various technology subjects for free. Steps have been added to the building’s sloping façades, allowing the people of Albania to literally walk all over the showpiece of the former dictator.

Located opposite the Giants’ Oracle Park, The Canyon is one of four buildings that form the first phase of the new Mission Rock neighborhood, which is being developed through a partnership of the San Francisco Giants, Tishman Speyer, and the Port of San Francisco. Located on an 11-hectare site, these buildings were designed in a collaborative process in which four internationally renowned design firms – Studio Gang, Henning Larsen, and WORKac in addition to MVRDV – worked simultaneously, creating distinct designs that work seamlessly together.

The renovation of the well-known Gymnasium Beekvliet in Sint-Michielsgestel is complete. The school has been extended so that pupils and teachers circulate past classrooms and other areas in a more logical manner, while a sky-blue auditorium forms the new heart of the school. The façade of the extension has been enriched with a panoramic work by visual artist Ian Kirkpatrick. The murals intertwine the stories of former pupils, passers-by, and board members with images of the future.
