The renovation of the Gardiner Museum's ground floor was guided by three core principles: Accessibility, Connectivity, and Indigeneity. The project aimed to create a welcoming, flexible, and culturally resonant environment while highlighting the museum's world-class ceramics collection. A key inspiration was the desire to strengthen visual and physical connections across the ground floor, provide improved circulation, and recognize Indigenous ceramic traditions through the museum's first permanent gallery dedicated to Indigenous works, designed by Chris Cornelius of studio:indigenous and curated by Franchesca Hebert‑Spence, the museum's inaugural Curator of Indigenous Ceramics.

The new Health Science Building transcends conventional practices for developing academic space and encourages students and teachers to move beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. The design proposal is one that embraces the opportunity to co-locate health sciences and neuroscience students in spaces that accommodate practical and theoretical learning so as to encourage a cross-pollination of ideas.

The design concept is built on an understanding that learning and creativity are not only fostered in the traditional classroom environment, but also happen in open and inspiring interstitial spaces that allow for serendipitous encounters and collaborative activities. The design focuses its attention on the essential qualities of collaborative spaces that include: natural light; connection to nature and views; warmth of materials; and comfortable scale. Building users can choose amongst a variety of collaborative spaces.

The Granite Club provides athletic and social facilities to its community of 10,000 members. The existing building, the fourth in its long history, dates from the early 1970’s and is remarkable equally for the high quality of athletic programming provided as it is for the opaque exterior walls that enclose many of those uses. The site is a beautiful natural setting perched along the edge of the steep wooded ravine of the West Don River.

This major addition and renovation to St. John’s Rehab Hospital takes full advantage of a remarkable site by reconnecting the major public spaces within the building to the surrounding natural landscape, which is part of the Toronto ravine system. The internal clinical environment has been transformed into a fresh, inviting space which will contribute to the patients’ rehabilitation and recovery. On entering the building, one sees directly through to the treed ravine edge, the hospital’s most precious asset.
