Under the aegis of several designers, the CROCS system (which stands for Centre of Rationalisation and Organisation of School Constructions) has allowed the development of a modular construction principle adapted to school buildings. Among the pioneer buildings constructed under this principle, the Perraires school in Collombey-Muraz is the latest example of a building that has been preserved almost in its original state. The canton of Valais acknowledged this achievement by initiating steps to protect the work. The main features of the CROCS system are a 2.40m basic construction frame, as well as a 60cm dual axis structural space which stands out prominently on the facade (thereby proposing a solution to the problem created by the curtain wall angle) and a punctuated, metallic load-bearing structure.

The aim of the project is to bring together, on the site of Sion’s former military arsenals, several cultural organisations in the canton, in particular the Valais media library and the state archives. The purpose of this union is to create a veritable centre for culture, science and heritage that favours exchange between different disciplines and encourages research, learning and the gathering together of people. Such a union also aims to optimise the management and conservation of Valais’ heritage and its accessibility to the public, as well as serve as a meeting point between artists and cultural representatives.

The project is located in a hollow at the edge of a forest bordering the Route de la Louviere in Presinge. The land slopes towards the northwest and the entrance to the site is via the lower end of the plot, on an internal road that also serves an EMS (a medico-social center) at the upper end. The compact nature of the volume allows for superb views of the surrounding greenery. Access to the apartments is via the private road along which is installed an access ramp leading to the parking area. The basement contains parking spaces, cellars, a civil protection shelter, and utility rooms.

This 450-metre bridge has an effect on its surrounding landscape that is anything but trivial. Even though it stands just a few metres from the ground, the impact of this large object is significant. In the same way that the “vertical architecture” of a skyscraper interacts with its urban skyline, the bridge’s “horizontal architecture” interacts with the land. In this case, the land comprises heterogeneous fields, a road, a railway track, embankments, a canal and a river.

This corner building at the northern gateway to Geneva resolves the problem of superimposing two very different schemes with a nine-classroom private school on the first three floors, and apartments on the other four. Corridors situated above the courtyard have been used to minimise vertical traffic, which has been reduced to a single stairwell. The school corridors are superimposed by the entrances to the apartments, most of which are duplex.

The training building at the new combat training centre stands at the end of a tree line, to the east of the footpath serving the higher levels of the existing military base. It is located on the path used by the soldiers, and its position marks a pivotal point on the site, a kind of landmark. The project is expressed through a pure abstract volume, comprising a partially buried reinforced concrete plinth on which stands, in a staggered position to the plinth, a ‘box’ wrapped in perforated metal, its cantilevered overhang forming the entrance.
