For some years a Sydney-based family had enjoyed their holidays in a tiny pre-fabricated house on the beachfront lot but had finally outgrown it. They wanted to improve the accommodation and take better advantage of the opportunities of the location and aspect while retaining a relaxed, simple pattern of inhabiting the site.

Strong Arm House is the bold response to a demanding brief to suit a busy family of seven who requested a flexible and practical home to suit their evolving needs. A modest bungalow is reconfigured and extended via a contemporary addition to create a sense of place for the young family.

House Acute / MCK Architecture & Interiors

The House Acute is a weekender built for a family of 6 on a site abutting the edge of the NSW coastline. The site is exposed to the ocean elements and also sits adjacent to a severe bush-fire-prone coastal bluff. The design and the palette in particular would need to be robust in nature. The site is also a small wedge-shaped, almost unwanted parcel of land, which would also ultimately influence the design. The conceptual approach was therefore to create a wedge-shaped home consisting of two long concrete pavilions lapping over each other on the acute corner.

There was nothing remarkable about the brief; full of common needs in this market such as more living space, an extra bedroom, a nicer master suite, better connection to the exterior zone, somewhere to work from, etc. The magic happened when the clients embraced their own journey and accepted that in simplicity, they would find their most exceptional outcome.

Sunrise House is a beachfront home in the dunes of the Australian NSW South Coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The original brief was humble, calling for a house that was as comfortable for a family of four, as it was for an extended family or group of friends. It was also acknowledged early on that it should be of a high quality to withstand the coastal elements and ensure a longevity in construction the locality was generally deprived of. The brief called for the design to make the best use of the Pacific Ocean whilst remaining conscious of the home’s street presence, avoiding it feeling obnoxious.
