The Main Ridge house sits within an established working vineyard located on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. The brief was for a comfortable 4 bedroom family home with a visual connection to the vines and which provided an area suitable for entertaining the international guests who visit our clients’ winery.

Harper Lane is an infill residential development built on a vacant ‘L’ shaped site – ‘leftover’ land wrapping around a 1930s telephone exchange. The client was a joint venture partnership between Neometro Projects and Icon Developments. Their brief was for a commercially viable residential development, working with an economical construction budget. Emphasis was also placed on achieving a high quality of amenity for the occupiers and responding to the concerns of the adjoining residential neighbourhood.The project provides 65 residential apartments and 1 commercial tenancy in 2 buildings, varying in height from 3 to 6 storeys. The site has 3m fall from the northern boundary towards Inkerman Street, allowing the lower levels to be ‘cut in’, with a café, a relocated substation and the upper basement car park on grade at the Inkerman St frontage while first floor apartments access the garden level at the rear.

The brief was to develop 2 existing house sites with 4 townhouses while minimising the impact on the environment. Our client Mick is a local who had lived in one of the existing houses, and wanted to make a contribution to the suburb he loves. Rather than use complex ‘active systems’ to meet the ESD brief, we took the approach that the DNA of the building needed to be based on a sustainable ideology. This was a two prong approach: the first was to engage a design and construction team who were based locally, cared about the area (a ‘think global, act local’ approach), and the second was to ensure that the building itself worked well ‘passively’ to minimise the need for air conditioning and artificial lighting - all without compromising the architecture. The outer residences have ‘traditional’ townhouse plans with living at the lower level and bedrooms upstairs.
