In a global unfolding post-colonial narrative, the ideas for a Museum in contemporary India hinged on excursions of mnemonic recall and equitability. The Museum of Art and Photography, Bangalore India, MAP plays on the tensions between the idea of collecting -collating, containing, and storing - which is the fodder for curatorship, and engagement with communities that embed the work as part of lived experience in the city of Bangalore, from the mundane to theatrical, and exotic to equal. The Museum design internally predicates art and its showcase over spatial dramatics to present generic gallery spaces, that insulate precious art and artifacts from ultraviolet light.

The land set near the forest, at the foothill of an adjoining local old family-owned tea estate has become the weekend home for a couple from Bangalore. Other than capturing the mountain and valley views, creating a vantage viewpoint, making different blocks for living and for retiring at night, and having common spaces for daily living with sunlight; within it, there are much deeper questions and things that inform this design.

A single classroom extension to a primary school for the underprivileged of the neighbourhood of central Bangalore created an opportunity of making the room like a tree house nestled between the existing mango and jack fruit tree so that it could make a diverse space for assembly, parent teacher meetings, children’s activity and break / lunch area.

The initial proposition had been intriguing, the client a fiction author and a former architect. The house would become a realisation of traversing pauses, private spaces and deeper private extensions. The home becomes a contemplative monolith of mottled concrete and intimate domestic comfort.
