This is a residence building designed for a multi-generational family. Due to the climate of northern China, this house adopts an introverted design strategy, with a central light well organizing the family space. Exterior windows on different facades, as well as large and small skylights create a soft, pleasant interior light experience. The floor plan is derived from the classic nine-square grid. This basic form contains closely related and independent components, which can well complete the ritual transition from public activity space to private residence. The spatial pattern of the nine-square grid is also very consistent with the Chinese cultural understanding of home and living space.

Yangma Island is located in Muping District, Yantai. It is backed by Kunyu Mountain and faces the North Yellow Sea. It is said that the First Emperor of Qin raised horses here during his eastern tour 2000 years ago, there is a small island in the east, which looks like a giant elephant bathing in the water, so it is also called Elephant Island. Since its development in the 1980s, Yangma Island has been a local public sanatorium and leisure resort in Yantai due to its facilities such as bathing beaches and racecourses. With the rise of coastal leisure in recent years, Yangma Island has gradually become a suburban tourist hotspot in Yantai. The Jelly Sea and the sea-hunting activities at low tide are both good places to go.

The Zhoushan Summer Hotel was completed five years ago. The strategy of adding balconies and changing the facades at that time changed the limitations of the original square-shaped houses in the area and brought a new sense of interior and exterior. As the Summer Hotel became more famous, this design strategy gradually evolved into a facade style in the following years. Almost all the newly built houses in the village had same white walls with square windows. The goal of reversing the villagers' desire to build "European-style villas" through a simple facade effect was quickly achieved.

This Brick Kiln is located in a corner of the former Beijing Brick and Tile Factory, Xisanqi Street, Beijing. From the 1950s to the 1970s, the Brick and Tile Factory supplied a large number of black bricks and clay bricks to the projects from the State Council and the "Top Ten Buildings in Beijing", contributing to the development of the capital city. With the development of the city and the transformation of location functions, when the brick factory was closed in 2012, mature communities with residences, innovative technology parks, and primary and secondary schools had been established around it, and the value of the urban area had been greatly improved. In addition, due to its age and disrepair for a long time, the brick kiln building has been structurally identified as a dangerous building that is on the verge of collapse, and in urgent need of overall renovation. Therefore, how to fully preserve the external form and historical memory of the original brick kiln, while also leveraging its location advantages, adapting to current usage requirements, and supplementing the cultural, creative, and leisure functions required for urban life has become a key point in this renovation.

Nevertheless, the consumption behavior of concentrated BBQ, which is a large-scale reproduction, is also a kind of subconscious continuation of the collective behavior and an inexplicable echo of the ideal world under the cultural crisis formed by the fast and restless consumer society.

When we visited the site for the first time, we noticed a disorderly surrounding environment: schools and dilapidated residences around with red and grey brick wall. There is also an old Chinese scholar tree right at the center of the venue, dominating the whole inner courtyard. The building was built in 1990s, originally for office use, and need to be converted to a new youth apartment that is able to host 100 rooms. Our proposition was to make an exterior space design in such a tough environment condition.
