Libocká Street, which borders the historic Hvězda (Star) Game Reserve on the north side and slopes down from Petřiny to Libocká Pond and Litovický Creek, is not very welcoming at first glance. From the south side, it is defined by fragmented original terraced housing supplemented by the remains of grand suburban villas from the late 19th century. Its northern edge is formed in part of its length by a terrain break and a downward slope. Just above the point where the street turns and slopes sharply towards the church of St. Fabian and Sebastian in Liboc, there is an interesting, large, and formerly almost impenetrably overgrown plot of land, with several atypical features. The height difference between the street and the base of the Star Nature Reserve wall that encloses it on the south side is as much as fourteen meters, as a near-vertical sandstone cliff between eight and ten meters high divides the land about halfway down.

When designing the set of three family row houses in the village-like context of Liboc in Prague 6, our aim was to pay particular attention to the local context and define a volumetry and a choice of materials that would refer to traditional architecture of the surroundings as well as to the specifics of the plot. The trio of family houses is set in the existing context along Libocká street in this historical part of Prague, formerly an independent village.

Family villa in Srbín was built on a spacious and partially forested sloping plot with a small pond in its more open part. The aim of the design was to minimise the impact of the generous volume on the terrain and garden and connect the house as much as possible with its surroundings by working with the relationship of the volume and the terrain, as well as by the choice of materials. Quarry stone of the same type as the stone found on the plot was used for the facades of the volumes above ground and for buttress walls.

Energy efficient house in Prague 6 is the result of a complete makeover and substantial extension of a semidetached house from the 1960’s in the north-western part of the city, well close to the centre. The client bought one part of the house situated on a sloping plot with an interesting view of northern part of Prague despite the dwelling’s very bad state. The brief was simple – to create a modern house with two separate flats which is going to be energetically and technologically efficient. Simplicity in the choice of materials and building techniques was also requested.

The plot on the outskirts of Prague, protected by a forest from the north and sloping very gently into the fields to the south, seemed ideal for an energy efficient house. The final design that was developed for this young family of 3 (planned to grow to 4) is a timber house, energetically very close to the passive house standard, employing natural materials, but mainly trying to be as simple and rational as possible. These two are for us also very important aspects of sustainable architecture.
