12VoltRetreat - #1 Siurell is a case study pilot to renew a series of existing traditional sheds and shelters into temporary sybaritic outside dens sited in rural Mallorca. Throughout the island’s agricultural fields these traditional stone shelters were built to act as refuges (to take cover and or/rest) for hunters and shepherds and also act as storage units for labor tools. The simple local mares stone construction walls and the light ceramic + tile roofing plus the small size footprint they occupy,( they range from 5 to 20 sq meters) make them very recognizable across the island. Currently, many of them are in disuse but still keep the outside enveloping structure intact, with the added value that most of them are sited in idyllic locations.

This 58 sqm attic sited in the center of Madrid was formally divided into many small rooms which were accessed by a central hallway. All light and ventilation came in through tiny skylights along the continuous slanted roof plane. The client had a very tight budget and insisted in wanting two complete bedrooms with their own bathroom as he envisioned the apartment to be ideal for university student rental.

Stair-Case Malasaña is the result of an exploration on how to grow up in altitude using the minimum plan space whilst using the staircase as the generator for complementary activities. The client owned a 46sq meter apartment with a small ladder up to the attic which was unventilated and humid and only used for insulation and storage. The proposal was to enhance this area by opening it to the main room and use it as an extra bedroom for guests.

Traditions in Mallorca continue to drift into making the island a tourist served region. Hotels, restaurants, beach houses and clubs keep opening providing a mirage of paradise to those in search for a quick and easy sun tan. Amidst these bustling tourist areas there are still areas where locals manage to live a life in where time has stopped, and alien tourist sun consumers seem far away. Being concious of the value of the land and the pleasures it provides, one way they manage to under grow the traditions is by spending their free time carrying out classical rabbit hunting by means of Ibizan hounds, (native to the Balearic islands).
