The view from a pier is normally that of water, but at the site of Marc Fornes' new sculpture Pier 865, visitors enjoy a panoramic vantage point over the tree canopy of a historical Knoxville park. Like its namesake structure, the sculpture commissioned by the City of Knoxville joins two worlds, bridging the Old Town neighborhood and theater district, inviting passers-by to walk out to the pier's end and engage in a moment of reflection and observation. Pier 865 also invites larger groups of people to linger: one of the cantilevered wings creates a shaded stage for small gatherings and public performances.

Standing at attention to Edmonton’s Police Service, Agent Crystalline emphasizes a sense of vigilance and acuity through its graphic associations. The work speaks assertively in the language of traffic. In the lexicon of traffic, hues that demand awareness are vital. The vibrant array strikes a balance between safety orange and a sweeter tangerine. Adopting the coloring of the construction offers the structure the ethos of protection and productivity; as well as a bold timeless feeling.

Zephyr Pavilion, a windswept canopy, offers a shaded passage through the courtyard of the Honors Residence Hall at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.The pavilion serves as a social anchor at the convergence of countless flows. Dueling cantilevers extend from a knot-like center, offering both a signal and a sheltering experience along the campus path. This gentle giant is a highly curated scheme of computationally finessed protocols informing a graphically rich structural skin. Four densely striped columns expand into bridging arcs, undulating wings and open looped columns that define oculi to the sky.

An ebullient structure seems to hover in the plaza of the newly renovated Valerie C. Woodard Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Pillars of Dreams is an icon to be experienced. The cloud-like pavilion is anchored to the ground on nine legs, which are part of the continuous aluminum surface that makes up the double-curving canopy overhead. These open pillars resolve into a field of clustered seating, establishing a public agora for visitors and employees. Along the path from parking to the main entrance, the pavilion accommodates friendly interaction as well as quiet moments for reflection. The airy structure offers relief from the sun but also casts dynamic light through its porous surface. The atmosphere within, full of color and dappled light, inspires curiosity, collegiality, and a renewed spirit of place.

Public art at the urban scale. The dynamic pulse of Wanderwall re-imagines an exterior parkade wall in the uptown core of Charlotte. Evocative of swirling activity—ecological, social, and economic—the folded metal facade describes elements of flows and networks, with a labyrinthine porosity that allows light through to the garage interior. This dimensional architectural skin is composed of 5,768 individual parts that wrap the South and East elevations of the Stonewall Station parking garage. Eight stories of vibrant aluminum cladding announce the building as a beacon on the Uptown skyline and produce several scales of experience that extend far beyond the building itself.

Where the Riverfront Park recreational space extends onto the waterway, Form of Wander is situated to host new outdoor activities and new memories of the Tampa’s active waterfront. As an inverted mangrove, the green-hued aluminum canopy announces itself among palms as a signal on the Hillsborough River. The tree-like structure appears to float between water and land.

For the event of the Jinji Lake Biennial, MARC FORNES / THEVERYMANY installed a large-scale outdoor pavilion on the elevated plaza of the Suzhou Center. Its undulating enclosure interrupts the usual traffic, as an unexpected, emergent environment. It appears to have bubbled up from the ground, or dropped from the sky. The structure, both massive in scale and delicate in white aluminum, lands lightly on an ultra-thin edge.

Long Form Statement
A parasol planted in the sand, a tropical fish on land, a tent at the foot of Franklin Mountains: this exuberant surface assumes multiple guises. Marquise is a spatial entry structure for El Paso’s Westside Natatorium. A visual icon and architectural threshold, the lightweight aluminum structure transforms the approach and experience of this new public building. Gridded curvilinear panels comprise the brightly-colored canopy and as well its self-supporting structural system.

A Tree Unlike Other Trees
On the road to Riverwood, a peak among pines announces the sprawling park, a scenery of natural splendor, but unreal experiences. Pine Sanctuary by MARC FORNES / THEVERYMANY is a “placemaker” for Riverwood Conservancy in Mississauga. It signals the entrance to the park and provides a unique spatial experience for visitors to wander through and enjoy. From the speed of a car driving down Burnhamthorpe Road West, the piece stands out as a visual icon, but its tall and pointed profile is at home in the context of Riverwood’s pine trees, even if it provokes a second look.
