RMIT’s New Academic Street (NAS) is a major project that completely transformed the ‘heart’ of RMIT University’s city campus, and radically redefined its education and student experience. The project brief included over 30,000m² of refurbished space in four existing buildings, together with three new buildings totaling approximately 6,000m². The project design is a collaboration between Lyons, MvS Architects, NMBW Architecture Studio, Harrison & White, and Maddison Architects, all of whom are university alumni.

Tiny Home was commissioned by RACV as an exhibition piece with the agenda to be an exemplar of sustainable compact living. RACV as an organisation acknowledges that society is moving away from the motor vehicle and is therefore steering part of its business to the home arena. The configuration of Tiny Home, its transport, materiality and content was open for us to freely interpret. The brief was to incorporate as many sustainable features as we saw appropriate, embody high design principles and exude a sense of joy so as to engage the general public.

Cabin 2 is an extension/addition to an existing 1960s log cabin located in bayside Blairgowrie. The surrounding coastal Moonah woodland forgivingly hides a suburban-like density of houses and network of winding roads free of formed kerb, gutters and footpaths. Many of the houses are holiday homes and there is an accompanying high level of development activity.

The orientation and associated views played a major part in the design response. The Coronet Grove Residence is built on one of the most elevated seaside locations in Beaumaris, having 270-degree views of port Philip Bay. These conditions presented a major dichotomy however as the view is to the south. The imperative to therefore place living spaces on the south to capture the view is counter to all ESD (Environmentally Sustainable Design) principles.

The site was formerly known as the Melbourne College of Printing and Graphic Arts located in North Melbourne and it contains the heritage listed State School No. 307 which fronts Queensberry Street. Our brief was to restore and transom this run down and derelict building into a new state of the art facility reflecting the Education Departments vision and commitment to educational leadership.
