The project was born from the idea of adapting the existing buildings and structures of an old manor house with vernacular architectural features for tourism purposes in a rural area. In order to preserve the essence and genuineness of the place, the main intention was the valorization of the existing architectural heritage using a fusion between tradition and contemporaneity.

This brand new building was recently open in 2016, in the Azores Islands, Portugal. Situated over an empty square, on a residential neighborhood, the building takes advantage of its location. Therefore the building's solid shape naturally arises from the topography that limits and defines the open space, which organizes the entire plot.

“Poça da Dona Beija” reconfiguration have improved the security conditions and the preservation of the complexity of this natural resources. “Dona Beija” has been one of most popular places in São Miguel's Island, Azores, in last few years. For this reason, some of its existent materials weren’t adequate for the enormous affluence and has become necessary to replace its whole walkway pavement with local wooden deck panels – japanese cedar or cryptomeria locally called.

From a remainder stone wall of an old construction pops up a contemporary house handing over to the sea. Indeed, this new volume was designed to improve its urban grid where is settled. The housing deterioration, seen at the neighboring, contrasts with the new volume, creating a relationship between the house and the surroundings. Unquestionably, the house improves its urban environment, as well as takes advantage of the sea views.

The proposed intervention is based on an existing summer house located in the parish of Seven Cities. It is surrounded by steep slopes where the topography is attenuated by the bucolic atmosphere, and inserted into a poetic and predominantly rural context, where agriculture still stands out as one of the main activities with influences on the composition of the consolidated urban and architectural grid of existing buildings.

The plan lies on a very particular geological site, known for its fossils abundance. For its scientific and educational environment, Pedreira do Campo is considered a natural monument. Therefore, the project look up for maintain it identify, and, for that motive, we considered two different walkways, one of which planned by us for contemplation purposes of the site, while the other is integrated on an existing one, maintaining its memory and identify. The first path slightly touches the rocky ground, as a form to avoid is presence at is minimum, whose wooden structure reveals intention to merge on the site.
