As part of the larger urban fabric, public housing draws its strength and unique character from the dynamics that are set up with its surroundings. Through an extension of these relationships, we have formulated a rich matrix of shared spaces within the precinct to celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of living that can be experienced only in the heartlands. The challenge lies in the unobtrusive integration of these common spaces and abolishing the negativity tied to the currently pervasive ‘NIMBY’ syndrome.

The project is located on a corner plot facing a busy road junction within a mature, nondescript neighborhood and consists of two equal and identical houses set within a relatively compact site with a shared driveway and green space. The houses were designed to serve as two family homes for a growing multigenerational family.

Designed by LOOK Architects in collaboration with Surbana International Consultants, campus housing (3 hostel blocks and 2 staff apartment blocks) and sports facilities for SUTD (Singapore University of Technology and Design) have been brought to fruition, realizing the university’s vision for a walkable, 24/7 campus that has academic, housing and recreational facilities within close proximity of one another. Capturing in built form SUTD’s educational pedagogy of collaborative learning, the residential-recreational precinct is liberally interspersed with pockets of interaction spaces, setting up the platform for an open, creative environment.

Providing ample 'break-out' spaces for relaxation, recreation and socialisation in the form of collaborative link bridges, the proposed building form provides users with the opportunity to 'momentarily detach' from work and engage in brief activities of 'play' for a quick recharge.

Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine Headquarters has emerged out of creative adaptive reuse of a 90-year old colonial building as premises for a new medical school at Novena, Singapore. Gazetted for conservation by the national agency Urban Redevelopment Authority, the former Mandalay Road Hostel has been given a new lease of life through careful restoration and addition of a new annexe.

The metaphor of a tree house was invoked from the onset of design conceptualization to create an environment for learning via a journey of discovery and play. The use of skylights, trellises and colored glass transforms incoming daylight into a myriad of shades and colours, creating an intriguing dappled light quality within the library that simulates light filtered through the foliage of trees. ‘Pods’ cantilevered off the main building façade exude a distinctive charisma on the exterior and create suspended alcoves at an intimate scale from the building interior. The library is raised above the anonymity of its mixed used neighborhood and sets out to stir the curiosity of the community.

Luxuriant scenery can transcend the role of a static vista, as the single-family home – Country Heights Damansara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – by LOOK Architects can attest to. A land parcel located on a gentle hillock within one of the several select residential districts in Damansara incited the designers to conceive of an integrative architectural approach where the house is virtually an offshoot of the natural setting it is nestled in.
