Project Harbour Club in Amsterdam’s quickly developing eastern neighborhood Cruquiuseiland is finished. The complex volume is a collage of old and new buildings and an unconventional program. There are the left-over industry-sized wine silos that have been turned into rooftop villas. Then there is the club at the heart of the new building, sound-proofed and structurally isolated to such an extent that it was possible to build apartments directly above it. Finally, there is the original building from 1901, neatly encapsulated by the new building and topped up with a green roof. The result exudes the same playfulness and eagerness with which LEVS architecten made and worked out the design for Amvest.

This building is part of an urban development master plan for block 11, which was designed by KCAP. This plan partially defines the sizes, the volumes and the indents in the block. The building highlights an important urban development location on the corner of IJburglaan and Daguerrestraat. This location is central in IJburg making it is easily accessible for all inhabitants. The same complex includes 13 residences that in part are located above the health care center. This combination brings out the livelihood and various functionalities in the busy neighborhood. The side street is open with a lot of variety thanks to the many frames and indents in the outer wall. The outer wall on IJburglaan is relatively closed off, an exception within the block. This way the corner forms a clear connection to the no less striking and high corner of the shopping mall across the street on the Daguerrestraat.

LEVS architecten, in Amsterdam, has designed two remarkable buildings with 3,500 sqm of shops and 90 apartments. This plan is located where ten years ago a huge fireworks disaster blew away over 425,000 sqm of housing and factories in Enschede, eastern Holland. Since the disaster, the district Roombeek has been spectacularly rebuilt. The new shopping plaza has been erected in the heart of the district in the exact location where the destroyed former Grolsch Beer brewery used to be. The location’s remarkable past was the basis for LEVS’ design for the twelve-story building The Brewmaster and the five-story high The Granary.
