Léon Wohlhage Wernik Architekten was recently announced as the first prize winner for their proposal in the Living on Kunstcampus competition. Situated in the heart of Berlin, on the estate of the Hamburger Bahnhof, a new quarter will be created there, including the dominant urban planning element called the “Kunstkubus”. A lengthy building with a faceted surface gives the residential area its own urban planning presence. All apartments radiate spaciousness, and can be freely partitioned and enter into a relationship with the city through large loggias, or so-called “green rooms”. yoo Apartments, Hafencity Hamburg. The luxury apartments in the Hafencity are situated in a highly attractive location in the new quarter on Dalmannkai, right by the water. The residential building is part of an ensemble around an open, raised private courtyard. The urban planning framework was given. The architectural characteristics present large oriels and balconies as a generous, sculptural figure with fine apartments. The façade consists of faced brickwork as a hanging façade structure conceived with limed bricks in beige. Central interior staircases each provide access to two apartments, which are partly organised as single floor flats and partly as maisonette apartments.

University library and media centre for the Leipzig University of Applied Science (HTWK). The library and media centre are an important focus of the urban plan. They create a framework for the newly organised campus of the university on Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse. As the largest university of applied sciences in Saxony, the HTWK Leipzig has over 800 workspaces in the library and provides a wide range of research possibilities for its approx. 7,000 students.

Living by the Mittlere Ring, Munich. The residential buildings directly adjoin with the heavily frequented Mittlere Ring. The initial requirement for the structure was increased noise protection for the neighbouring 1950s residential quarter. The challenge was to fulfil the noise protection requirements while also providing quiet, high-quality living space. The architecture achieves that and more by presenting a new, striking image in the traffic-burdened urban space. Both the design and the colour set it strongly apart from the surroundings. Car drivers emerging from the nearby tunnel and pedestrians approaching from the underground or the surrounding areas take notice of the building’s drive and its particular architectural design. The visible side of the façade is layered: Individual façade elements are placed beside each other to appear like a scaly gown.

Liselotte Rauner School, Bochum-Wattenscheid. The new school is developed from an existing 1930s building and the new extension building to create an ensemble along the road building line. A second, calmly graded adjoining building was inserted at the same level on an angle towards the compact volume of the existing building. Both buildings retain their autonomous design: red bricks with white-framed window bands in the existing building and a light pink plaster façade with charcoal coloured window frames for the new building. Together the two structures powerfully present themselves to the urban environment.

Bavarian State Parliament in the Maximilianeum – Extension in the northern courtyard. The small extension is elegantly integrated with reserved generosity into the listed monumental ensemble of the Maximilianeum: The extension represents a natural complement to the existing structures while also retaining figurative autonomy. It creates a new conclusion for the state parliamentary building towards its northern end, giving it an unmistakable character. The glazing is flush with the façade to highlight the building’s figurative presence. From an overall perspective, the vertical window elements alternate with large ceramic plates. From close range, the ceramic façade reveals an interplay of horizontal recesses that cast intricate shadows.
