Existential Pilgrimage Space - The Meditation Chapel is less a place for traditional worship within an urban community and more a sanctuary for solitary individuals to savor their existence before the divine in nature, essentially a retreat from the city. It originated from the request for a small prayer space for these pilgrims. Hence, rather than mimicking the form of minimalistic architecture, which aims to strip everything down, the architect opted for functional simplicity, which is faithful to the role of a vessel that can hold the visitor's existence.

The planned B.G.V.C. (Bujeon Global Vision Center) on the adjacent site of Oncheon-Cheon (Oncheon Creek) across the Dongrae District in Busan has expressed its willingness to contribute towards the international community in its name. It aims to communicate with Busan and Dongrae District to provide hospitality and peaceful sanctuary for Oncheon-Cheon (Oncheon Creek) and Busan citizens, and to embody a modern Christian program which is rich and incorporates the city and nature. The purpose of the architecture is to be a landmark for missionary work, peace, and love.

The Holy Light Church, which opens toward the city, was planned to be a continuous corridor through the church square from the main avenue, across the lobby hall, and to the neighboring park facing the rear of the church. The lobby is an open-air indoor plaza for the public and an open hall for children. The hall is open to the surroundings horizontally, so it is revitalized by the city and the church provides the neighborhood with a bright and open space. Since a modern church is a complex facility where many members will worship, fellowship, and have various gatherings, it is necessary to provide effective spaces and a movement flow system in a situation in which different spaces are stacked on a narrow ground and underground space should be utilized as a worship room. Therefore, the Holy Light Church, located in the downtown area of the city of Dunsan, Daejeon, consists of the following three parts.

The Church is embedded on the steep street-side in the busy district of Suji-gu, Youngin-gu. The large concrete panel blocks protect the main sanctuary and the educational facility from the dust and noise in the busy road. A big window is placed on the center of the façade towards the city in order for neighborhood watch programs to operate.

This architectural project was commissioned as a monument to the national patriot Son Yang Won who was made a saint of the protestant church, for a life of holy sacrifice and devout Christian faith during Japanese Colonial Era. The project has been constructed as a ‘Symbolic space memorial’, in which the three guiding mentalities of Son Yang Won, ‘Resistance’, ‘Sacrifice’, and ‘Reconciliation’ are structured for view throughout the three exhibition spaces.
