An abandoned farmhouse at the entrance to a farming village in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture, was renovated into a studio for the client, a music and video creator who took over the property. Farmers in the southern part of Chiba Prefecture have stopped farming year after year; their fields have become abandoned, and their houses have become vacant. People in professions with little connection to the land, such as designers and creators, are moving into a place that has been deeply connected to agriculture, but because the houses and warehouses are arranged and structured around agriculture, they are wasteful and uncomfortable for outsiders. We deeply considered the way that makes it possible for the new generation, the new occupation, and the population to be natural in the area.

We planned a weekend house for an elderly couple on a site with a steep slope which was the edge of a suburban detached housing complex in Kisaradu Chiba Japan. The first time we visited, there were lots of flowers and plants which had been grown already. Also, lots of trees had been leafy green. The space had a rich nature which is rarely seen in such an old suburban residential area. The owner has been gardening and picnicking with fire every once a week for a decade with a wish to build a weekend house someday. They have been hoping that have the lifestyle of having a calm weekend by eating fresh vegetables from the garden, spending some time in front of the fire, and just sleeping before stepping back from busy Tokyo

In 2020, with COVID-19 raging, the remote work has been installed semi compulsorily, a very innovative lifestyle for Japan, it was thought that more people would consider leaving densely populated areas such as central Tokyo and Chiba City to live in the suburbs or more rural areas. In response to the emergency situation caused by the corona crisis, Ichihara City in Chiba Prefecture established “the Ichihara Life and Work Commission”, a public-private partnership to accept people who wanted to move to the satoyama area, while at the same time taking measures to prevent infection.

Housing developments and family member
The site of this house was a housing development which had passed around 40 years since the area had started selling. There are over 400 houses but they have no value as a property and people who are living in are not so young anymore. The demands of client are: an over 330 square meter land space and enough distances from neighbors for a better privacy. Then the site was thought as the better conditions because of the low price of land and the density of the development.
