KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten has won an international competition for the new Shenzhen Art Museum and Library. Selected over schemes by Steven Holl, Mecanoo, OMA, and others, the winning project takes the shape as three "elements" - an art museum, library and archive, and new "Culture Plaza" - united by a "stone podium."

The building’s restrained formal language serves as a projection surface for the s.Oliver world of fashion and large display windows present this inner world. The vertical access via a spectacular oval staircase with open galleries is the focal point of the building.

The Frankfurt Sparkasse Head Office at Hasengasse was built between 1954 and 1956. Now, after having undergone extensive conversion work, it has morphed into Frankfurt’s Central Municipal Library. In 2005, Frankfurt - based architects office KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten was assigned with the design and the facilities were ready for use as early as July 2007. On September 19th, 2007, the library was officially inaugurated in the presence of Lady Mayoress Petra Roth.

Just three short years ago, German firm KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten placed first in an international competiton for the design of the Tianjin Art Museum. This week, the museum has opened its doors to the public to enjoy galleries filled with Chinese calligraphy, western art, sculpture, and modern art. Located along the lakeside promenade, the Art Museum enhances Tianjin’s cultural district and completes the 90-hectare development area, along with a library, an opera house and another new museum designed by various architects.

As part of the celebrations of Algeria’s National holiday on November 1st the foundation stone for the new “Mosquée d’Algérie”, designed by KSP Juergen Engel Architekten, was laid at an official ceremony in Algiers. This formal act marks the beginning of the construction of the world’s third largest mosque after the Islamic pilgrimage sites in Mecca and Medina. With its prayer hall for up to 37,000 people and the approx. 265-meter high minaret, the Mosque will in future be one of the largest religious buildings in the Islamic world. The complex offers space for up to 120,000 visitors daily and, in addition to the prayer hall and the minaret, boasts further facilities such as a cultural center, an Imam School, a library, apartments, a fire station, a museum, and a research center. Located on the northeast side of Tianjin University campus this 120 meter long, 58 meter wide building is s venue for both the university and national sporting events. Tianjin Sports Arena seats approximately 5,000 spectators, and represents an important link between the campus and downtown.

Located in the cultural center of Nanjing and in the immediate proximity of the historical Presidential Palace of today’s provincial capital, the new Jiangsu Provincial Art Museum is one of the most important museums in south-east China. It has space for temporary exhibitions and houses a permanent collection featuring traditional Chinese art, which illustrates the cultural wealth of Nanjing – one of the oldest cities in southern China. The sizeable collection is kept in archive rooms in the Museum, which meet today’s techni- cal and strict conservation requirements. Having previously designed the National Li- brary of China in Beijing, the German company KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten has now completed its second significant cultural building in China.
