Designed for two sisters and a brother, this project was born out of the families' desire to live closer together after experiencing the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Having lived apart in different parts of the city for years, the pandemic highlighted the importance of proximity and connection. This shared building reflects their vision of fostering closeness while maintaining individual independence and intimacy for each family unit.

Designed for a couple and their four-legged companions, this project celebrates the integral bond between humans and pets. The design balances private and shared spaces, with nearly half of the site dedicated to an expansive garden—affectionately referred to as the dogs' domain—while the remainder houses communal areas for the family. A pivotal feature of the design is the seamless integration of the indoor and outdoor. The living room effortlessly extends into the garden through a sliding folding door, blurring boundaries and enhancing spatial fluidity.

Big-Little House / Kamat & Rozario Architecture

Big-Little House is a small house with a small footprint built on a small plot but with large volumes. What makes this house large? One-fourth of the 1500 square foot plot is empty and left unbuilt for a garden. All the major living spaces, viz., the double-height living room, the family space, the dining, and the kitchen, are tied together by the fact that they all inhabit a large volume that overlooks the garden.

The plot was 40 feet wide and 75 feet deep. The project is an attempt to maximize the dialogue with the outdoors as you navigate the depth of the plot. Therefore, it was imperative to interrupt the plot depth with punctuation marks of sunshine and air.

The house is envisaged as a large concrete tray that hovers over a white monolith. The placement of this tray is directed by the sun’s movement with respect to the vertical white surfaces below. As a consequence, the tray extends itself outwards, shielding the walls on the west and south. The plan of the house opens itself up to the more climatically pleasant east in the form of an open court.

The design developed from the client’s brief, which was to have a modern house inspired by the family’s roots in Kerala, India. We looked towards traditional palace construction of Kerala for inspiration. We noticed a few key features that most of these structures portrayed, such as - the verandah that wrapped the living spaces all around, the appearance of a heavy masonry base on the ground floor, with thick arches and carved columns and a first floor which appeared to be lighter in terms of materials and overall treatment. This became the inspiration for the front façade of the building. Carved columns, which are a prominent element of traditional Kerala architecture, were adopted but with a contemporary twist.

The Design took inspiration from the firm’s name, WHITE CANVAS, an independent advertising agency. A blank white canvas takes on the personality of the artist.. We drew an analogy to Absolut Vodka’s “Absolut Blank” Campaign, where artists were invited to express themselves on a blank canvas in the shape of the iconic bottle. The clean White canvas takes on different Avatars depending on the artists’ imagination.

The existing structure was a 30 year old typical Bangalore house with thick load bearing walls. Most of the outer walls were very close to the plot boundary cutting out a large amount of light. The neighbor’s house too was hugging the boundary wall in certain areas which cut off even more light.
